How do I handle my PhD?
H

I thought I had my PhD well trained and I was horribly wrong.

I took him for a walk yesterday and I let him off his leash. However he ran away and started harrassing other PhDs. Their owners were giving me evils but I tried to call him back and he was just ignoring me.

It got particularly nasty when he went for a particularly attractive PhD (the owner was a bit of a gimp to be honest).

So the moral of the story is, you think your PhD is under control.... but its all a farce.

i know there is a problem with supervision but I dont know what the problem is or if the problem is a problem

No you are definately not. One of the major issues in a PhD is supervision and if you don't have a good supervisor, you're in trouble.

Good luck :)

I think the best way to approach this is in a really professional way. Arrange to have a meeting with her and tell her its about the current situation and issues you want to highlight. Then at this meeting just tell her how you feel for example, "I feel that we are spending to long discussing endnote/referencing rather than getting to the point of my actual research and this worries me because I want to finish my PhD is less than 10years".

Ok, the finishing in less than 10 years is optional but I think you get the idea. If you put everything across really professionally, she can't object or bitch at you.

If this still doesn't work, you really need to talk to your main supervisor.

Is this the one that has been doing a PhD for like 10 years or something?

I would absolutely refuse to have this person as my supervisor.

Awww DJ, lots of Green & Blacks on me.

Get together with some of your girlie mates and have a great night out and if you come across any hot looking chaps, have even more of a great night out!

Forget the little GIT, not worth wasting your thoughts on, he doesn't deserve you.

I like the way Ginga's phd is a he. Mine is a he too and at the moment I have him under the thumb....the question is, for how long will he behave?!?!!??!

Where do you want to go for a holiday?
H

Theres a few places that I havent been yet and dying to go, including S America (Peru to be exact - love to do the inca trails), Oz and New Zealand and for a nice relaxing holiday, the C'bean. The first two would require a long period of time for me to fully appreciate those places but C'bean is a possibility during the PhD :)

What did you all do before your phd?

I don't plan on staying in academia however some companies prefer their scientists to have postdocs so I may consider doing one after my PhD. There are also industry-based postdocs (which obviously sounds more appealing to me).

Depending on my family situation at the time, I may consider going to the dreaded USA to do one....

Making the most of my time as an undergraduate

I agree with Mia about the studying but it would be really beneficial if you could manage to organise and event or something similar. Especially if you managed time (for you and other people). It's good experience and looks fantastic on your CV, especially when it comes to job interviews (eventually).

easter hols - anyone taking any?
H

I spoke to my mother and she assumed I will be taking the three weeks off with the UGs.....lol. She didn't sound too impressed when I told her I would be home for the bank holiday weekend but thats it!

Not sure if I should start a new thread but how many people are considering doing a post-doc after they finish their PhD and why do they think it would be useful?
