PhD admissions - please advise..

It would be useful to know why you want to do a PGCE and two masters before the PhD.

presenting at conferences
H

I agree with Missspacey. For my first ever conference presentation, I kept feeling nervous and bodged up my practise one in front of my research group and superivsor. However, on the day, I went up there and said "Good afternoon" and suddenly didn't feel nervous at all and REALLY confident.

Remember this is your own work and no one knows it better than you. It's fine to get nerves, I've seen well known people in my field who have presented hundreds of times look a tad nervous when they start.

A good tip is to get rid of the nervous energy by jiggling about - good idea to do this in the toilets.

worried about my relationship
H

I think it's possible to have the right balance between relationships and your PhD. However it does depend on a few factors, such as your supervisor (some say you have to work all hours - others don't), yourself as a person and your partner.

I know some people want to try and spend as much time as possible on their PhDs but you have to try and remember that a PhD is one small part of your life, you will finish your PhD but your family/partners are still going to be there.

I'm utterly skint!

I guess I'm one of these students that seems to be throwing around their money (I don't buy £2.50 coffees though!). I'm lucky I'm fully funded plus a bit more. I also have very generous parents plus live with my husband so we do go on nice holidays, eat out (but don't spend even 1p on booze).

It would never occur to me that what beverley is saying happens (that post made me feel bad). Everyone in my group is funded in some way or another so I don't know anyone personally who experiences not having enough money for breakfast.

If I asked someone to socialise (lunch etc) and they said they couldn't afford it every single time, I might think that they just didn't want to socialise with me. I guess it's a very difficult situation.

In love with my supervisor!
H

From what you have said, it sounds more like an infatuation rather than love. You say you don't want anything from him but then you say you want some kind of response from him.

I don't know if you are acting/feeling like this because of breaking up with your fiance - as I don't know the details. Maybe your self-confidence has fallen a bit or something and your supervisor is there and is being nice to you.

Dressing up for him, looking into his eyes, you're playing a dangerous game when it comes to your PhD. It's inappropriate behaviour and if you accidently/purposely took it forward you and even your supervisor could get into trouble.

Take a break for a couple of weeks if you must but if you can't shake this feeling then you should consider switching supervisors.

Do you not have a fiance?

I remember you had a couple of threads about being jealous of his female colleagues.

Looking for a PhD vacancy in chemistry

mietka, if you are waiting on a publication for your master's thesis, then just say that is why you cannot give them a copy.

If you are just applying for a position, then at the first stage I would be suprised if you need to send anything more than your CV and a covering letter.

I can't remember what area you are in Verdy but I know industrial post-docs (science) do get at least 30k

The Apprentice Last Night

Bit lame last night. Jenny (red hair witch) should have gone but he got the right person in the room.

What was with the bullying of Sara? I do have to say she looked like a little mouse when they had the house-board meeting.

Next weeks episode looks very entertaining, can't wait!
