Princeofwales, your posts are making a mockery of the people on this forum and beyond, who have worked hard to get the PhD positions (and funding) and where they are now. If a PhD was THAT easy, everyone would have one and they would be handed out like mickey mouse degrees.

Think hard on why you want to do a PhD and if it is worth spending 3 years or more FULLTIME do one.

I think that by staying and missing out on this great opportunity, you would be making a big sacrifice for this relationship, something which he isn't prepared to do.

It's up to you whether the relationship is worth that much or if a long distance thing could work.

My thoughts were similar to Shani.

My husband would move to the ends of the world to be with me. He's already shown this by moving 300 miles away from home to be with me, when he has never lived away before. This obviously meant new job, leaving behind his large circle of friends (he's very social), his family! He's always said, the place we settle depends on where I get a job but this is because I have spent twice as long getting to this stage in my life and I am more specialised. It could be a different situation with your guy.

What are his reasons for staying where you are now?

The funny thing is, I have had elocution lessons when at school. Although I don't speak as "properly" as I used to (influence from living with people who say things differently) I am probably closer to the Queens English than the average person.....

Well people in Sheffield sometimes find it difficult to understand my home counties accent, which always makes me laugh.

I once got told I sounded South African.....that was just weird (I definitely don't).

I hate being a student, I absolutely detest it. This is the main reason why I can't wait to finish the PhD. I definitely don't regret starting it though.

If you were to do the PhD, what kind of job would you be looking for after? If it's still the PGCE teacher training, I would say forget it.

I think you should be trying to find out why your applications failed for the teacher training courses. Get some feedback if you can.
