I don't know anything about the course but registration is pretty straight foward.

Appart from the main university registration that everyone has to do (lots of queuing and form filling), you will have somekind of registration for the course by the people who run it. This is useful as you get to meet the other people that will take the course with you. There are plenty of talks about the department and very likely a drinks and nibbles thing where you get to meet other people in the department.

As its said above, a masters can help but also gaining work experience is also useful.

Please don't buy a parrot unless you plan being at home all the time with it. They need as much attention as a child otherwise they can become depressed and damage themselves, I speak from experience.

Avoid buying lunch, always make something yourself. Avoid eating out, always try to cook.

I admit I spend a lot on my food shopping but then again I don't drink and go out a lot so I have more money to spend.

Also to BB's comment about students who attend these have less results - it's compulsory to attend these for my groups. So maybe it is different for pure sciences.

I have to attend two - being part of two research groups. The first takes place monthly and one person (using a rota) will select a paper, not neccesarily in the area of your phd (more different = better) and read around a bit and then do a power point presentation for about 40 mins. The last 20 mins are for discussion among the group about the paper/results.

The second takes place monthly as well. About 5 people (again rota based - you only present every other month) chose a paper in the area and do a quick presentation - about 10 mins with 5 power point slides - say what the paper is about and what you think of it.

Pretty useful in terms of getting to know other parts of your area and coming across different science. Also get a lot a of practise in presenting and answering questions.

Seriously though, it sounds awful. Must be impossible to get any work done with that hanging over your head. It's so difficult to believe that people can be so nasty in what's supposed to be a professional environment.

I think you are being really unfair to this guy. He made the effort and took the time to ask contacts to try and get you some help. If someone did that for me, I would be really flattered, even if I didn't particularly want the help.

I don't see how he is trying to tell you what to do. He has found someone that obviously knows the area and can offer some sound advice.

It would be better to tell him that you don't want the help right now as you want to figure things out yourself but say you are grateful to know that the other person is there if you get stuck.

I think you would be making a big mistake in getting rid of this guy, he sounds like a good friend (unless of course he wants something from you and is sucking up).

Hi Bobby, I didn't do much for the wedding in terms of planning, my parents took care of it but it was a huge wedding (900 people) as well as things happening on the day before and day before that.

However, the week before I got really very stressed which is odd for me. I think if you keep it small and make sure you start planning far in advance, you will be fine.
