Writing up chapter drafts - how much feedback are you getting from supervisors?
H

Glad to be of help. An alternative would be to present your work at relevant conferences and see what the audience have to say. What about other academics in the university? Some post docs are really helpful with proofreading.

Any recommendations for writing "Validity" Section (Qualitative Research)
H

I'm writing Chapter 5 of my thesis and is finding it really hard to articulate the discussion on validity of findings. Question:-
Do I discuss all aspects of validity ie face, construct, criterion, internal, external, population and ecological validity?
Comments gratefully accepted. Ta muchly.

Writing up chapter drafts - how much feedback are you getting from supervisors?
H

I would expect my supervisors to comment on coherence and robustness of argument. Highlighting typo errors is just a cop-out and sign of lack of knowledge of your research area. Ask someone other than your supervisor(s) to comment on your work. I'm sure they will point out other issues.
Good luck and keep us posted

Yeeeeaaaa I passed my viva! - so how did it go?

Congrats

Quitting PhD. A good idea?
H

I'm glad to see that there are lots of PhDers out there who have the balls to call it quits. Well done and good luck. As for me, I've always wanted to do a PhD because I enjoy the cerebral challenge. Things hit rock bottom last year and sacking the supervisors was the best thing I've ever done (next to marriage)in my PhD career.
Well done all the girls and guys with guts and balls!

i failed my upgrade
H

I failed mine too and it was a real blessing in disguise! My research questions, aims, design etc were much clearer in the resubmission. I had NO help from the crap sups but passed the reviva and resubmission with NO corrections! How good was that? It was totally DIY. The book which helped me was "How to do research" and " How to write your thesis" . Good luck Pineapple and let us know the result of your resubmission.

Focus group=tape recording
H

Yep, get a sony-mini disc recorder with a multi-directional mic. Runs on battery and AC. Hardly notice its there because its just so dinky. Good luck

Desperate for advice!!!
H

Alarm bells are ringing for you and if you ignore them, it can only get worse. The PhD is always going to be there for the taking but to ruin your life and the integrity of your character for that title is seriously not worth it. My advice is to leave the PhD, and look around for another one. Your departure (and others) could trigger an investigation into the rogue supervisor. Too many students put the PhD before themselves and set the precedence for bullying behaviour. Get on your bike, mate.

Change of supervisor
H

An ugly truth is unfolding with one of the new supervisors - she's a bloody control freak and wants to change the direction of the thesis! In addition, she wants me to do a third phase. I think she is well off her head as the write-up period is for writing, not further data collection. Must be a real jinx! Any one out there who knows a cure for jinxism? (new word that I've just invented)

Change of supervisor
H

Yep, I had a very hard time with my sups too. I should have asked for a change of supervisors after the transfer viva but decided not to - for a quiet life. Three years later, just recently, I sacked them! It took 10 long months to get rid of them. They wanted my thesis under their names and were disgracefully unwilling to let me have a new team of supervisors. Well the Sh^% hit the fan and they had to back off or it would just get uglier. So my advice to all PhDers with lousy supervisors is to sack them as soon as alarm bells ring. Things can only get worse unless you end the relationship with the lazy sods!

Sacked my supervisors for poor academic support and bullying 6 months before submission
H

Just to let you know that the complaints officer concluded that there was no evidence of poor academic support or bullying. Nonetheless, I have been granted a change of supervisors. I'm not really surprised by the outcome - the university is not about to admit that they have employed cowboys to run the department. But by granting a change of team, they have, by default admitted that there are some losers in the university. I think they worked out that if they don't let me have what I want ie a new team, the s*%" will hit the fan and it will be very nasty! I had my first meeting with my new team and they are the real macoy!

Success at the second try
H

Well done, Sozaboy! and good luck.

boundaries with supervisors
H

Looks like he just wants to keep the distance. Might be a good thing not to be too 'pally' with your sup.

Yipeee! Successfully sacked supervisors. How good is that?
H

Thanks Rick,
Perseverence brings good fortune, according to a Chinese proverb. All cylinders go to renew writing up; 5 down, 6 to go.

Hello fellow PhDers,
I've just been told that I am freed from the bully supervisors. After 10 months of sheer determination and nerves of steel, the university finally agreed to free me of those bullies (of course they did not uphold my complaint of bullying and poor academic supervision) but by acceding to a new team of supervisors, they have, by default, acknowledged my complaint.I "fired" those bullies and requested for a change of team 6 months prior to submission of thesis. You can read the first post under the title "sacked my supervisors 6 months before submission of thesis" for more details.
My message to all PhD students who suffer at the hands of rogue academics is: "its never too late to do something about it".Hip, hip hooray!
