A master programme completely different than my graduate subject

I think the original poster is looking for English literature masters courses rather than English language.

Forced to graduate with a Masters at the end of a 4 year PhD
H

A standalone MPhil takes 2 years fulltime and 4 to 5 years part-time. I know of senior lecturers with an MPhil and no PhD. I also know of a senior research fellow with an MSc and no PhD.

change of discipline??

Hi, the University of East Anglia offers environmental science masters courses that might be of interest as they offer many module options to choose from, spanning from physical science, computer science to social science.

I think with your UG degree you could get on a course and then you can choose what direction you want to go in. The university seems to have a steady stream of funded PhD opportunities in this subject area, (perhaps something for the future).

Platform to highlight current postgraduate projects?

Some UK universities and their PhD students participate in 3MT, Three-minute thesis presentations of current projects. It's a UK wide competition, also other countries run it too.

There are links about it on the web.

Hi,
Yes, it is possible, and I can't see any problems with this. Universities are businesses and they are looking for bums on seats at the end of the day.

Go for it, if this is what you want to do. I'm sure you have many transferable skills.

I've noticed there has been cross-discipline areas of postgraduate funded research you might be interested in, such as English literature and medical humanities, but you might be looking to do something completely different.

Help to write academically

In the news very recently, there's an article about the 'staggering' trade of fake degrees revealed.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42579634

"Thousands of UK nationals have bought fake degrees from a multi-million pound "diploma mill" in Pakistan, a BBC Radio 4's File on Four programme investigation has found."

Apologies, this is more connected to the comments about buying essays and academic fraud.

Supervisor doesn't read PhD thesis

The Students Union informed me recently that if a student makes a complaint there is a procedure in place so the university/supervisor cannot give a poor reference.

PhD Loans

Just an idea but if the university says no and you need to start in Feb, perhaps asking if you can start in Feb 2018 on an internship. In the same department to get to know the people and facilities and you would self-fund this.

Then start the PhD officially in September 2018 with the loan.

PhD Loans

I think it 's to do with the academic year. PhD loans are for the academic year starting 2018/19, which would be September 2018.

I understand you would be frustrated.

Could you speak to the fees department at the university? Or Student Finance England to confirm,

Another option might be to apply for charity funding? Run a search through the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding, the university should be able to give you a password to access the website (for free) even though you haven't yet started.

PhD Loans

I think the PhD loans are for PhD's starting in September 2018 unfortunately.

Do you think you and the uni could wait and you start the PhD in September 2018? I don't think you are allowed to have started your PhD before you get the loan. In February 2018 we will still be in academic year 2017/18 and PhD loans are for the academic year starting 2018/19.

There's a bit about it on this page:
https://www.findaphd.com/funding/guides/uk-phd-loans-scheme.aspx

As you are self-funding I would think the university would be ok with you starting in September 2018.

It seems likely that applications for the PhD loan are made through Student Finance England and applications are made online. The applications don't seem to be open yet as you mentioned.

As far as I am aware you cannot appeal where a matter of academic judgment is involved. What grounds are you trying to appeal on?

I'm sorry to hear this, what does your Student Union say about it?

Open University BA for a MA English Literature.
H

Hi Nathan,

An OU degree is respected. My BA is not from the OU but I do know of a lecturer who did his undergraduate degree with the OU.

To do an OU degree requires a lot of self-motivation and I'm sure you would be fine. Universities are businesses and they are looking for bums on seats.

I say go for it with applying for an MA if that is what you want to do and good luck.

This is an old thread and KataD was marketing something by the looks of it, the post was edited by the moderator.
