How to support a PhD during writing up
H

I would second above, make dinner and do the cleaning! Also, occasionally, take me out for dinner and don't hassle me or distract me from writing!

Loneliness and Isolation during your PhD
H

This is a common problem for PhD students. In your situation, I would look at socializing away from your PhD, something else all together. Do you have any other interests?

The easiest way to make friends is to get a job. Could you get a job or volunteer for half a day week? That may help build your social life and ease the isolation.

not submitted thesis - PhD withdrawal

If I had a child with a medical condition during my PhD, I would have quit too. So it is completely understanble that you quite, prospective employers will understand that.

You really do need to be kinder to yourself. Have you thought of getting some counselling via your GP? I think it will help you come to terms with your loss (of the PhD) and boost your self confidence.

Zutterfly, I'm sure it'll go fantastically well! :) Enjoy your trip, I hope you get a few days to enjoy the trip too!

Sarah, sorry to hear about your rejection, but hopefully the feedback means you are in a better place to make the next submission!

Best of luck with your application Zutterfly! Looks like you are still progressing well. Are you off on holiday soon?

My supervisor is not strict on deadlines at all, in fact all my deadlines are self-imposed and I am much stricter to myself. But I worry sometimes that in an effort to meet my own set deadlines I may rush through the work which is dangerous. Chickpea, I think its better to take a bit longer and get it done properly in the first stage rather than having to do multiple revisions which takes an absolute age!

Like at the moment, I've spent two weeks making corrections and amendments to a chapter. It only took me 4 weeks to write it up initially but amendments in comparison are taking so long. I did not take this into account when setting deadlines for other chapters!

Hi, how did everyone's bank holiday weekend go? I decided to take time off and did not get much done, but I'm hoping tomorrow I can get back into it! How are you all doing?

Qualitative interviews - first approach to potential interviewees
H

It depends - have you got the info about your study on your official uni website? I would put something up.

Which sampling method are you using? Convenience? Snowball?

If you already know these people over Twitter, I would probably informally contact to see if they want to take part, and maybe link to the said web page for more info? I would be more likely to respond if someone informally asked me first, feels more personal than receiving a mass email.

Or you could get a gatekeeper to recruit for you. So ask your professor/supervisor to email on your behalf. It really depends on who you are trying to recruit.

The Postgraduate Moans Thread

Quote From Auroracase:
Just a quick moan but I love when your supervisor gives you feedback that completely contradicts what they said the month before! I know I'm not alone in this feeling...

Yes it is quite common and utterly frustrating!

i would like to have a general moan about not having enough time to work ...

that's a tricky one..... but I suppose that unless you have lists of all responders (i.e. which questions form one group of 5) you cannot work that out

Yes I do have list of all responders

Thanks Sarah :)

I have 5 questions that have possible responses Yes, No, Don't know.

There's a large % of people who have responded with Don't know for all 5 questions and the % is similar across all questions. I want to work out whether it is the same people (and to what extent) across all 5 who have responded with Don't know. Is there a way to work this out?

Masters Dissertation in 3 months?
H

I think its do-able. However, I would probably err on the safe side, switch to part-time but finish it in 3 months.

Hi, is anyone a bit of an expert/experienced with stats? I've just had a chapter back and I need to do an additional calculation (final one hopefully!) and I'm trying to figure out which method to use ... Thanks! :)

Your uni might be able to set something up with Turnitin to give you access. Ours did last year and I submitted a draft literature review (which got a score of 2% similarity!), but they set it up to have 'assignment dates' which have long since expired so it won't accept anything else now - I might ask if they can repeat the process this year.

Thanks, I'll try and see if something can be arranged.

Zutterfly, that sounds like a good move, to use for papers but not for chapters.

You are making excellent progress btw, well done! When is your first full draft due/you plan to submit? I'm aiming for end of September. I've still got 3/4 more chapters to write, but they are not huge.

Thank you Hugh :) I think we are all progressing well- this thread is so helpful, particularly since writing up is pretty isolatings.

How about yourself? What is your proposed schedule looking like?

Sounds good! I have until end of November for 1st draft but I want to get it finished by September. I think I'm going to have quite a few changes to make between first draft to final draft, so I want to give myself extra time.
