Coloured diagrams in thesis?
H

Quote From TreeofLife:
I made mine very colourful. I bet the examiners hated it!

Seriously though, a bit of colour is good. I printed mine at uni for free.

And yes the examiners will get a soft bound copy of your thesis (printed by you, sent by the uni) prior to your viva.

Thanks! :)

Coloured diagrams in thesis?

Quote From DrJeckyll:
Yes, I used lots of coloured maps etc. I did the graphs in grayscale and printed them colour (looks better). I printed separately on good quality paper, and asked them to post to binders (too expensive).

Thanks. How do you do them in greyscale and print them in colour?

Coloured diagrams in thesis?
H

Hi,

I'm just wondering if any of you placed coloured diagrams in your thesis or did you design them to be black and white?

I don't personally have a colour printer so I am weary of using coloured diagrams BUT they do look good. And am I correct in thinking that examiners will be posted a hard copy of the thesis that you submit? I'm in the UK btw.

Thanks

Changing supervisors at 14 months.......
H

Hi, very sorry to hear what you are going through.

Could you get an additional supervisor on board who could give you the extra support? My friend's third supervisor is the one who gives all feedback and most support to him.

What do I place in the methodology chapter?
H

Thank you very much! Some very useful suggestions here!

I think I might leave the methodology chapter to write in that case until my three studies are written up.

What do I place in the methodology chapter?
H

Hi,

I have three studies, each of which have their own methods section, detailing everything that would go in a methods section of a journal paper for example, but in more detail.

In this case, what would go in the methodology section?

Thanks!

How much support can I expect (1st year publication)
H

Quote From Tudor_Queen:
I guess it depends on the field and phd. Mine is psychology and I'm taking the alternative thesis route, so my thesis should consist of a set of papers. We are expected to have submitted for the first publication in the first year. Any advice on my actual question? :)

Your supervisor should be supporting you especially in the 1st year. However, what do you mean by support? I only expect supervisor to read a paper, and suggest very minor or editorial changes.

How much support can I expect (1st year publication)
H

Quote From Tudor_Queen:
I'm in my first year of the phd. I've planned some studies and will be collecting data for it, and I already have in mind the kind of journals that it could be published in. Their quality is average - to - low average. I want to do better than that but I don't feel I have the skill yet to accomplish it alone, given that I am a new phd student. But I feel 100% that I could accomplish it with some support. Is it normal in the 1st year that I should expect my supervisor to support me to do better than I could do alone / without support? I mean in terms of planning studies that could be submitted to high quality journals........

I love your enthusiasm but I don't think students publish in their 1st year - it is quite rare!

Is it worth doing a PhD?
H

If you want to pursue a career in research, then yes.

Otherwise, no.

Difference between a Choose-Your-Own-Topic PhD and a pre-set, pre-funded PhD?
H

Quote From sustainablefoodie:
I'm applying for what looks like a great PhD position to do with sustainable food consumption. It's a project that has received several million euro in funding for a group of academics to undertake and they're advertising a funded position for a PhD to join the project. All parts of it seem to be planned out, so I'd be just doing as I'm told for 4 years.
However, the range of studies involved, the skills I'll have at the end, and the area of research are so good that I feel like it's worth the lack of freedom.
What are your opinions on these sorts of positions? Will I be more employable having been attached to a real research group?
Thanks!

Yes! In a way a pre-set pre-focused PhD is much better, because it means you are focused straight from the start!

Waiting for R&R Result
H

It must be a very difficult wait! But the good thing is you do not need to go through a viva again?

If you have addressed all the concerns of examiners point by point, I do not think you have much to worry about :)

How long to edit a PhD?
H

I would say definitely yes! Though Sep 2016 is 9 months away?!

PhD or Job
H

I would definitely go with the job!

I am enjoying my PhD but academia is a very difficult environment to work in. It is very isolating, competitive and there is absolutely no guarantee of a job. Even senior academics are on short term contracts.

PhD Research Topic HELP!
H

Quote From markhossain:
Thanx Hugh, I'll look into the referencing part, and I was told the title needs to be more specific as in asking a question to the problem? rather than a statement? and isn't the title for your PhD is ever changing? or it needs to be specific when you are applying with a proposal?

title is usually a statement, and yes it probably will change, but it just needs to make sense to the reader. If I received a proposal with a title that did not make sense, I would not bother reading further.

PhD Research Topic HELP!
H

The title does not make sense to me. It needs re-writing.

The literature review needs to be incorporated into the introduction and you need references throughout the whole document, Also use Harvard referencing. Mendeley (a software will make this much easier to do)

I'd be happy to look at it again and comment on it, once you have made above changes. Feel free to PM me. Best of luck
