Done too. May I ask, how many questions were there in total?

I'm designing a questionnaire too and trying to work out how long it will take to fill in.

Writing up in year 2?
H

I think it depends on your PhD - what type of PhD is.

The more you have written up the better. For me however, though I am writing up the methodology chapter as as I go along and the study chapters too, I am leaving the detailed literature review right to the end because research in my area is constantly growing, so it makes more sense to write it up formally in the end, or else theyll be too much editing to do in the end.

Depression due an illness I can´t control during my PhD
H

I'm sorry for what you have been through. It must be a very tough time.

What job would be stress free and help free you from the depression? Do you think that type of job exists?

It is natural to feel a bit down now and then when doing a PhD, but if it was making me seriously ill, I would leave the PhD. It isn't worth sacrificing your health for the sake of a PhD. Unless you desperately want to work in academia, you don't even need a PhD for most jobs. Honestly, it isn't a big deal when you look at the bigger picture.

As you are probably aware, most successful people don't have a PhD. My partner doesn't have one, and we both started off at the same time, and it will take me at least another 10 years to get to what he is earning now, for example.

Did any of you do a web-based survey?
H

Hi,

I am planning to do a web-based survey with a group of people that are all internet users, and I want the results to be representative of this group.

The reason why I am doing a web-based survey is because I expect a higher response rate than a paper-based survey.

However, I don't have a sampling frame (i.e. a list of all email addresses of these groups). I was hoping to distribute the link to the survey via snowball sampling through contacts, adverts in magazines, on social media etc etc

I was wondering whether this would be OK to do and whether this would have an impact on the validity of the results, especially in relation to the representatives of the results?

Confused about the methodology chapter and methods ...
H

Hi,

I'm a little confused about the methodology chapter and the individual methods section in a specific study chapter, and I'm hoping someone could help?

So I have a qualitative interview based study. What information do I place in the 'Methodology Chapter' and what information related to method goes in the 'Study Chapter'?

How long was your results and discussion chapter?
H

Thanks everyone! None of the quotes are repeated. There just are a lot of findings. I think the idea of separating it up into different chapters based on themes is a good idea.

Eds, they could be but then it'll just lengthen the word count, as there'll be repetition.

I am thinking of placing a small section on summary of findings.

Hi,

I'm just writing up my results and discussion chapter (combined) from a qualitative interview based study.

I still haven't finished it but it has already reached around 30,000 words!

I've tried to be as succinct as I could but there are many findings. The quotes do take a lot of the word count but reducing them will just loose the richness of the data.

Any advice? How do I reduce the word count?

Generalisability of qualitative study findings
H

Chickpea, thank you loads! May I ask your a favour please? Are you able to take a picture of that section and post it here or send it to me please? Or give me the name of the book please?

Thanks!

what software do you use for research?
H

Mendeley for referencing and sorting papers - definitely worth looking into
NVivo for qualitative software
Visio for diagrams
Word for writing

Thank you both!
Pjlu, that was very well explained :)
