Eligibility for PhD application
H

I got an embarrassing 2:ii but went and did a part time MSc to make up for it simply because I wanted to do a PhD. In my experience, for every ten applications you send out, you get looked at seriously for 50% of them and rejected for interview of the remaining 80%.
Keep at it, keep looking. It takes time (months for me) but persistance, like all good PhD work, pays off.
Good luck

It's not about punishing your supervisor or being a whistleblower...
H

I agree and empathise with you QTpie. Luckily my supe seems a nice guy, (early days still) but experience with my previous employers was something similar. One guy drew attention to bad practice, was consequently sacked and didn't work for 5 years! All because of a whisper campaign.
There is no excuse for blatant unprofessionalism from those who us students are supposed to look up to until we can stand on our own academic feet, so to speak. Start a working group, you'll help many but don't let it be an excuse for others to use it to vent vitriol.
Just as an aside, I thought the NUS was supossed to deal with things like this?

find a supervisor or a title first? help me..

I'd look for a topic of interest. The supervisor I think is secondary, as relationships can change over time and are subject to whims of the moment. You'll be stuck with your project for three years if you choose wrong!

Overwhelmed with meta-analysis

Hi dub22, the topic is dentistry, performing a compare & contrast, so the question is easy. What about you?

Overwhelmed with meta-analysis

Never having done a meta-analysis before, and now having to do one in three months, has anyone got any suggestions about where to start. And "the library" is not an option! :-)

Ok then, general consensus is it sucks to do a PhD

Coming up with a topic once in PhD
H

Sounds like my PhD! The advice I was given: there's always an angle to exploit"; you've basically been given a licence to research what you want in the topic. Read round a bit more, something will not have been done

We've seen the worst a PhD has to offer, does anyone have any amusing and inspirational snippets to add to acyually encourage people to do a PhD..?!

Wellcome Trust PhD Interview
H

I had the same thing with pharma as well. I got the usual questions:
1. Experiences
2. Why should they give you the job?
3. Knowledge of the subject area, etc
4. Random questions out of left field. Usually utterly irrelevant.

Just be honest, that's the most important bit and feel free to offer your opinion. After all, they want someone who can think, not an automaton. My advice: don't worry about it, just go in, relax and take time to think about your answers!
