lol. havnt been on for a while. been busy. have spent time doing a lot of reading...not on lit.. but on methodology. i am now so much more focussed and more aware of what im getting into. have done quite a bit of writing on methodology which i will take with me on my first meeting. now i dont feel so hazy anymore. in fact i dont feel hazy. i have a focussed research question, hypotheses etc. glad im spending december doing all this reading as im much better prepared now for my doctorate i start in 3 wks.

hi. im 42 and i start in january. i have about about 2and a half hour commute each way. i will be going in about 4times a week. i feel i have to try and make it in. if i stay at home i will end up doing domestic chores, i have 2 messy teenagers. so i will put my PhD first and just let the house stay messy..lol.

i start my PhD in 3weeks time. full time but i plan to work about 30hrs spread over 3/4 days and fit in all the hours i can for my PhD. luckily while working i can also fit in my PhD work. i have no funding, i wish id applied but too late now. iv paid my fees and have just resigned myself to a life of PhD and work. sometimes i wonder how il manage as i have 2 teenagers but luckily as my ex has them weekends, il fit in working then. my uni expect me to teach first and 2nd year undergrads which il be paid for, dont know how much il be doing. i see a life of 3years of hard work and no social life but i want my PhD so much i am willing to take all thats thrown at me. i plan to fit in about 25-30hours work per week on the PhD (research and writing)

i did my BSc and MSc at same uni but starting my PhD at a different uni. for me i think its best. i feel im more focussed and will try harder going somewhere new. but then again, the new uni is a much better uni..lol.. and so much better for research than my old uni. my old uni has a reputation for high drop out rates for PhD. the new one has a very high success rate. so im glad im making the change....in 3 weeks time :-)

i chose my fascinating topic first.. applied to a very good uni... offered place after interview... met second sup... first one was away at the time. i start in a few weeks. i dont know what my 2 sups are like. i did like the 2nd sup i met at the interview. i hope it all works but in my case i accepted sups i was offered and i dont know any of them. the uni however has a very good reputation for research - one of top 6 in UK :-)

at my uni:-
50 - 59 = pass
60 - 69 = merit
70 and above = distinction

hi. i am also in the social sciences. start PhD in jan. will be interviewing 'real' people. already secured access to a drop in centre used by the group i plan to research on. plan to spend maybe between 6-12 months going into the centre on a once a week basis so will cost me in travel fare. other than that and cost of photocopying my questionnaires which i will use in the interviews i plan to carry out. very senstive group im researching so will take time to get to know them and going regularly will achieve that. did have this in my original proposal and been told that i may need NHS clearance. cant tell yet until i start. though i have been given permission by the centre manager i know, the uni says i may still need NHS clearance. thats my case. hope this helps... x

ok. im def off to bed now. gosh! why iv got so involved in this? just so exciting! just want Obama to win :-) tv says its accepted now. hope so. truly hope so. for those of us who never really agreed with the war, we can now have someone in with compassion who's gonna try to chang things. lets toast to Obama! hip hip HURRAH!!! my friend started his PhD october and has weekly meetings for one to 2hours. i thought that was the norm(?) im starting jan in a different uni and i thought id be having weekly meetings and hope so but no more than fornightly x
