J

gosh! i missed all of this.. personal statments etc. i stayed at same uni for my masters and just automatically got in. staying at same uni for my doctorate. may not work for some but for me it does. i have kids and being a single parent, the uni is close to home. works out cheaper also as ex-student so get discount on fees i also feel happy in same surroundings, people etc. so makes for a happier me and happier teenage kids

Preparing for Masters
J

hi. i took 2 years off when i finished my bachelors in 2004. started my masters in 06 and finished last year. taken a year off and now starting PhD in october.

what does 2(i) and 2 (ii) means?
J

bachelors.... tut tut..its almost 2am...bad spelling. off to bed now. zzzz....

what does 2(i) and 2 (ii) means?
J

ps. the first grades are for your bacholors..

what does 2(i) and 2 (ii) means?
J

a pass is 40% and above. a 2:2 is 50% and above and a 2:1 is 60% and above. first class is 70% and above. in my uni (UK) that is ur overall mark. so u could have marks of 40's in some work and have higher marks in others and still get a good classification.
for a masters degree 70% and above is classed as distinction. 60% and above is merit. below that is pass -dont know how much below. i never looked below a merit...which i managed to get for my masters...lol!

Can I get a Lecturing Post without a PhD?
J

im starting my PhD in october. i want to go into lecturing and judging from staff vacany jobs on uni websites i have been trawling, i decided i needed a PhD. so spending 3years on my doctorate. for me, i felt a doctorate was essential to increase my chances. yes at my uni, there are lecturers with masters, but on speaking to my uni i was told that they've been there for many years and they now do not employ lecturers without PhD's (my uni is in the UK). im hoping to move to the republic of ireland later and checking staff vacancies on uni websites there confirmed to me i needed to do my PhD.

Is there life after 40 as a women with a PHD?
J

Starting Masters in October... but worried about failure, please advise
J

hey! half way through, i thought id never make it. and i did! taken a year out and now facing PhD in october. i ask myself if im a sucker for punishment! a friend who knew me when i was doing my bachelors, when i told him 2 years after my bachelors i was starting a masters, he laughed and said 'but u hated it in ur last year'!!
that same friend knows im starting my PhD now and just shook his head in amazement...lol. i shake my head at me sometimes. iv just decided to myself - it all came together for the masters and i finished with a merit... so il just keep going with the PhD and il get there

How do you get a first in the masters?
J

i take it uni's mark differently. my uni is very strict with marks. someone i know came to do a masters from the OU and failed miserably in the first year of a part-time masters and has now left to go back to do a masters with the OU.

How do you get a first in the masters?
J

ps. did also get 70% in a piece of work, but mainly all late 60's except the 2 low marks. overall my average grade was in the 60's bracket= a merit.

How do you get a first in the masters?
J

hi. finished my masters last year. start my phd this oct. in my uni (UK) a distinction is 70%and over. not 70% in every piece of work, but 70% overall. i got a merit which is 60% to 69%. a friend of mine was in the 50s and was classed as a pass but they were very pleased as he was a foreign student and english was a language he only started learning couple of months before starting the masters! i did badly in a couple of essays, had 40's but did high 60's and a dissertation at 59%. i had kinda lost it at the end and didnt work on my dis. but i knew by then my grades had fallen into merit and if id handed in a better dis, i would still have got a merit. i know many of my classmates slackened on their dis when they realised it wouldnt make any difference to their classification if they spent more time on it. im not saying thats a good attitude to take...but thats my experience of my masters.

Help! May need to quit PhD due to depression...
J

oh dear! havnt even started yet...must tell myself not to freak out after reading this. jeez! good luck. im out of here!

im confused which uni to go to. help??
J

thanks adem, however i feel comfortable staying where i am. as im self-funding i get 20% off so saves me hundreds of pounds each year. the fact that i know my proposed supervisor so well and he has a vested interest in me is very important to me. even now i can ring him anytime for help even though i havnt started yet. from what im told motivation plays a big part in doctorate studies and im made aware there is a high drop out rate, knowing this guy and knowing he wouldnt allow that is also very important to me. he has informed me that it looks bad on any supevisor's record if he has drop outs and he doesnt take anyone on that he doesnt plan to see through to the end. so i feel confident with this guy
