Are Phd students working too much?
J

I also work full time but with communting (by car so no chance to read) it's more like 7.30am-6.30pm plus marking in the evening. I've found that I have to cram PhD into non teaching time so am frantically catching up now BUT I have a husband and two young children so they have to fit in as well. Our summer holiday will be part research trip for me (about half). Gym etc has had to go by teh wayside as has catching up with friends. We all have to juggle what we can.

Great resource - will definitely book mark that - thanks

master at 25 years, could i be too old?
J

I was 29 when I did my first Masters (part tiem) and 38 when I did second and was 43 (but a month before my birthday) when I started PhD. There were retired people on both my masters.

Can your travel insurance help? Can you contact your bank re the visa card - I've had situations when I have been travelling and not informed my credit card co and so they block it but if you call them they can go through security questions and sort it. You can reverse the charges usually. That might at least get you some money to buy food if not teh full shopping experience.

I think you need to be more specific - do you mean history, geography, politics, sociology. language etc?

Which specific countries are you interested in?

What started really good ended awful....
J

Poor you. This was my nightmare when I was presenting at an international conference April and so I had two usb sticks, several sets of notes (these were all split between hold luggage andn hand luggage), I e-mailed the presentation to myself (at work and at home) and my husband had a copy to e-mail if that all failed. Fortunately nothing went wrong for me that time.

Def time for the wine!

do you and your supervisor text message?
J

My supervisor rings me at work occassionally but I can't see a situation where we would text (but then I don't really text many people)

A happy thread!

I'm impressed you've managed to get so much done and with a hangover! My hangover days are long behind me (I can't even manage to consume enought alcohol these days to get a hangover)

Heck, jepsonclough. I hope you don't mind me being nosey but what was the cause of it?

Don't mind peoplel being nosey at all! I wish I knew. I suffer from severe allergy to strawberries (fairly easy to avoid but carry an epipen) and have had anyphylactic shocks triggered by other fruits or combinations (and even mulled wine). I think it might have been some tomatoes or a combination of fruit / salad vegetables. I had enough warning that my husband could get my antihistamines and give me a mega dose. Didn't need to use the epi en this time.

I'd rather minimise the side effects (and yes I have taken beta blockers and didn't like the side effects) than dismiss something out right just to stick to a princple. And Rescue Remedy (and other Bach extracts aren't homeopathic).

It always amazes me that scientists are happy to invent something like the Higgs Boson because they need it to understand how the universe works but just becuase they don't understand how homeopathy work they dismiss it outright (can't there be some as yet undiscovered thing that makes that work?)

Harvard Referencing - translated works
J

Hi

I've got a translated work which was originally published in german in 1958. I have an English translation which was 1996 - how do I reference a direct quotation in the text. I know in the reference list I need to put the translator's details at the end but where (and when) do I say it was published? Do I just reference the English Language version I have or should I reference the original German? I'd kind of like to reference the 1958 version as that was one of the earliest works on the subject (most English work was early 1970s) but I speak no german at all so can't claim to have read the german.

gain PhD degree, anyone know?
J

I would have thought the first point of call would be your former university and / or your former supervisors.

Despite spending most of the day suffereing from an anaphylactic shock last night, I have managed to submit an article to a journal :-)

Have you tried Back Rescue Remedy - I find it works and has no side effects - you can get it as a spray or drops or there are new pastilles now - Boots sell them

Software Engineering – which uni to choose?? It is urgent

Newspaper rankings aren't that helpful for PhD (or even masters) as they are focussed on undergraduate provision, but there are usually rankings available for your subject.  The Times Higher does rankings by subject for research but as these are global they may not be much use. Are there any journals which give rankings for research - I know there are in my subject and the uni where I am taking my PhD featured in the top 20 worldwide but does not feature in Top 10 for undergraduate provision in UK.  I'm quite happy to be studying at a university with a good research reputation rather than one which is good for undergrads. Your personal circumstances though may dictate where you study (I live 15 miles from my uni which is easily manageable - the no 1 uni is 220 miles away which was never a possibility for me).  You should probably take into account the supervisors at the various universities and how closely that aligns with your research interests. Funding &/or availability of sessional work is something else which might come into play.
