its not uncommon in engineering because years of industrial experience as a practising engineering can be a greater asset than a purely academic career.

probably. you could come up with your own ideas but you may not be in a position where you are going to be able to determine whether the data you need is going to be available or even exists!

hmm, do you need to? a lot of studentships in this area will already be attached to some project so you can apply for a specific project.

Hmm, tricky. Definitely go see your graduate advisor - I hope he or she is not in the same school as your second supervisor though.

Also, are you research council funded? You may have to consider contacting them. The research council guidelines says that it is the institutions responsibilty to provide clear complaints procedures for students who have a grievance with their supervisors. However, in your situation, you may be able to make the case that the normal university procedures are compromised because of the personal relationships between the staff (i.e. marriage).
