apparently i got a meeting tomorrow with collaborators and have to prepare work for it. they didn't tell me until 10am today and i only just got in from a weekend trip away.

they can go stuff themselves then.

if you read a lot of papers you should be able to work out what standard your work is relative to others.

there's loads of this kind of stuff. oxford has numerous programs in the area. cambridge. ucl, imperial. nottingham. manchester. edinburgh.

Actually, I'm not being a total nuisance, I'm only turning them down because they are offering not particularly generous salaries :(

i've been the opposite. i've been really horrible to employers and turning them down after they offer me a job :S

Work ownership can be really problematic in modern "big science" projects. You can get situations in which a number of postdocs and grad students working on one thing and then it becomes dubious as to who did what. It is a nightmare for thesis examiners.

In my postdoc application I made a remark about my stuff being commercialised and it impressed the reviewers. I think in some fields there is an increasing emphasis on translating basic science to practical engineered solutions.

My share portfolio has seen steady growth :)

Next time you bump into your super, bring up the fact that you know and sound really excited that someone is going to be using your stuff and that you feel you are contributing to scientific progress and see what his/her reaction is ...

Don't let on that you are peeved by it. Ask questions. Say "I wasn't quite clear about ### though and what they going to do for ###" Hehe ;)

it depends on your journal but for my papers it was in-house editors who checked whether it was appropriate material for the journal and then they passed it on to reviewers to verify the quality of the contents.

i would just forward the email on to your supervisors for their reference.

Sorry, I'm being a bit thick today and I'm not clear on the situation, what do you mean by "a certain amount got rejected"? Are you saying in general a certain number of papers will be rejected after the last round of reviews or a number of referees have already said your article is not publishable.
