Countdown to final draft - Last month of writing-up.

Wooooo hoooooo!!!!!!!!!! That time has come and the end is near.

I thought I'd be excited at this point, but am torn between the dread of having to know what I will do after, excitement that's its nearly done and nerves that the viva is looming if i hand in and i will finally be made to talk about my work.

That said.. i have a month to do all the corrections, which aren't much (11 in total), but footnotes and bibliography are yet to be completed. Therefore i should not underestimate the hard work that lies ahead.

I feel as though i should be working 12 hours days as I had planned but my plans never work out in reality. Therefore I will just stick to aiming to get something done each day. That way the task is less daunting and I feel less overwhelmed by it.

I also don't have money to pay if i have to resubmit so its really important I aim for NO corrections! :-O Yes we can!!!! And worst case scenario end up with minor corrections.

Strangely enough, I still feel like an impositor. Despite my supervisor saying my work is of PhD standard I feel as though it's rubbish. I need to get over this way of thinking. However, this way of thinking may work in my favour and help me 'perfect' the draft.

Well.. the reason for this thread is to hold me accountable to doing something each day and to give you an opportunity to nudge me in the right direction when am slacking.

I will be giving details on what am doing each day.

My supervisor send me a friend request on FB!
J

@Teek - am hoping that's the case.

i have chosen to totally ignore it! i had changed my name hoping no one would find me that way. i think they may have used my email.. its complicated.

LOL@keanbean: it's for similar reasons that i cannot have my supervisor on my fb. maybe after graduation. lol.

i agree with the networking idea.. just not now. after passing my viva i will be interested. lol. right now it could affect how my supervisor sees my work!

Advice for revision phase
J

Hi all,

I'm coming towards the end of my two weeks self-given holiday. Everyone else around me has submitted, apart from the one person with whom i share a submission date. So the pressure is on.

My submission date is 30th September. At the moment am thinking, get everything done by 15th September. So I am giving myself 6 weeks and allowing 2 weeks for supervisor's final look through before submitting.

Did anyone else use this kind of time frame? Did it work for you?

I have 7 chapters in total. 5 chapters form the body. All other chapters have been approved but the conceptual framework is weak. so i have to redo it. What am left to do is:

1) an entire reread & rewrite of the conceptual framework chapter 2 (am allowing 2 weeks)
2) final polish of ch.3 & 4 which are case study chapters(1 week)
4) final polish of ch.5 & 6 which is discussion and overview (1 week)
5) final polish of ch. 1 & 6 and do bibliography (1 week)
6) polish methodology (1 week)

I intent to be doing 12 hour days.

7am - 7pm divided into slots: 7am - 10am, 11am - 2pm, 3pm -7pm.

it will never be perfect... so i intend to hand in after doing this. :-(

From First Draft to Final Draft
J

Hi all..

I never realised that preparing a final draft would be so horrific. My first draft was 110,000 words long and now I have to cut it down to 80,000. I tried cutting chunks but things didn't work very well that way. Eventually I had to go back and proofread the first chapters, which are wholly irrelevant in hindsight, and am finding that its an emotional process losing some good parts of the thesis.

Now am left with a skeleton that needs work to flow and flesh to stand and its still double the length its meant to be.

is this normal? what were your experiences revising your thesis?

am contemplating a complete rewrite of the theoretical framework to suit the later chapters as current one is a real mess!

any tips? consolation?

sorry about the rant. i thought i'd be happy and things would be easier after first draft.

hi guys,

i very much need your help here. how do you show that you have an appreciation of:

1) the policy and strategic issues currently affecting teaching in higher education.

(what are they????????????????????? )

2) how do you demonstrate, ' a willingness to share our instititutional commitment to excellence in all aspects of work and output.'

No life for the next seven days
J

Hi Teek! I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm in a state, but ok. Gradually easing back to work. Keep going! Am 4,000 words down, 26, 000 to go!

No life for the next seven days
J

Hi all..

For the next seven am cutting down words and completing all undone footnotes in my thesis. Quite a mundane task! On top of this is the fact that am grieving the loss of a friend two weeks ago, which has meant I haven't worked on my thesis since. Life is just so cruel and shocking! Anyhow, my supervisor expects a cut down to size thesis on the 15th - i have to cut down almost 30,000 words - and therefore I have to move on from this and get down to work.

Who else has such a tight schedule? Lets encourage one another. I intend to read my thesis seven times in the next seven days. God help us all!

Much love,

J.:$
