Fundamentle error???? arrrrgghhhhh

manda - no pun intended, but we do have moderators on this site. it is not your job to deal with people's conduct/ comments on this site, especially when they are NOT directed at you. sounds like you should be keeping yourself busy on other matters - not moderating - coz that role is not vacant at least not as far as i know. we're here to share opinions, not to moderate other members perceived behaviour.

cheers,
J.

Should I leave academia? CONFUSED

i plan to get a job - any job - thats gonna pay me well for 5 years while i have my kids and build a home - then i'll apply for a visiting scholar/post doc position and then join academia or a research job then. at that point money / starting a family won't be my biggest worry and i'll be able to do what i enjoy and have a lovely family and take a holiday when i want. my phd is in business and law, so anything in a lawfirm, business consultancy, auditing - believe it or not - at least they don't care what degree you did. they train you. working for a non-governmental organisation. anything really. am open minded. 'What else could I do with a Psychology PhD do you think?' Anything! your degree area doesn't mean you're stuck in that field. you could try business jobs. most business organisations would consider your application. degree specification is never important there. I plan to keep up with developments in my field in my spare time. evenings and weekends when i can.

am so happy for you! decision making can be a nightmare. re - your questions: 'how viable is it to actually go back into academia once you have had another career?' - a lot of people join academia from industry or different jobs, so this one is not a big hurdle. if you need to catch up all you need to do is apply for a visiting scholar position for about 6 months prior to your academic post. you can publish new articles and keep up with the reading then. 'Can you advise me on how you will be doing this?' -

Part time LLM from UCL

i've done an LLM. its easy to do if you dedicate your evenings and weekends. its also not as demanding at the PhD. more reading though than the undergrad degree but at least its focussed reading so in a way its easier. Go for it!

2:2 in IR
J

guys, you're so pessimistic! i know one guy who got a 2.2 in his degree and is now a millionaire. he works for a company as an administrator and runs businesses on the side. he is completing his MBA with one of the top UK unis. soooo... its not all about 2.1s and 2.2s. it's not grades that determine how you turn out. it's you who determines that. try getting into a uni somehow and work your tail off that year and get a decent 2.1 and forget about all the 2.2 stuff.

confront your supervisor

all the best MichaelA. i had exactly the same problems last year and narrowed my topic to issues i am familiar with and skills that i have. my supervisor has since been nicer.

hope all goes well for you.

Should I leave academia? CONFUSED

i would say try applying for other jobs related to your field apart from consulting. the main issue here is financial security. that is a dilemma that i am currently in myself. am considering leaving academia after my phd to get a non-academic job which pays well for about 5 years. when i attain financial stability, i'll return to academia. before that, i don't see academia as being a viable option for the kind of life i want for me and my family. hope that helps.

ps: no need to be ashamed. you are working and earning a salary! the most important thing is to prioritise what makes you happier - financial stability regardless of job type in the immediate future and a happy family in the near future, with the sacrifice of academic interests for a while, OR pursuing academic interests now and not being able to provide for a family - living on dire straits and only being able to provide in the long-term. i have personally chosen the former.

if its not too obvious i would chance it and after i graduate, write a paper revising the method. or simply do the corrections now - whatever makes you happier. all it does is change your completion date?

Feeling demotivated, any advice?

one more thing - i've been having a down time lately and doing exactly what you've been doing. i don't even hear my alarm clock in the mornings ! i can't be bothered to wake up til noon. i think its because i worked so hard since february, especially in april and may that after submitting my work in may and getting my supervisor's approval, i had a burn out. could be the same thing? i missed a deadline again last week, but am making sure its done by friday so i take a week off and see my parents. yeh! am also using a lot of rewards in between - exercise and shopping etc. don't worry. we'll all get there in the end. its only painful to actually start writing. once you start, it gets easier and more interesting.

Feeling better after I found this forum :)

7 pages sounds like enough to me. Don't push too hard or you'll run out of steam. i had the same problems you mention. i changed my supervisor in my second year and things are looking up.
