conferences in management in the US
J

Does anyone know how to find out when and where management conferences are taking place in the US???

18 months in....what have you achieved?
J

15 months in - still struggling with lit review. resubmitting on Fri - hopefully that'll do for the transfer.

currently listening to some music - done nothing in the last two days. will get back to it in the weekend...

i reckon, i need time for myself.

Otto n driven2insanity - don worry, i hear this is normal..stay calm and work consistently, read somewhere that that's what it takes.

how do you organise your day? juggling teaching/publishing and thesis
J

verdy - so how did you organise your work when you were writing your paper?

how are you guys organising your days? i've not quite found a way that works for me. i end up doing some things and not others. currently focussing on my work, and hoping to publish soon to stand a chance in a job in academia.

am particularly interested in how you juggle your teaching/part-time job, your thesis and your paper for publication.

how long do you give yourself to write a publishable article? 1 month? 2 weeks? 3 months? 6 months? what's the best way to go about organising your time to achieve a publication?

i hear that lecturers write during holidays.. today i attended a class where one lecturer said he works evenings and weekends. he said being in academia is a vocation.

does that mean that i have to give up my telly, which is my only remaining evening activity, to stand a chance in academia?

date for viva - agh!

fluffymonster - 6 weeks.. you'll be fine.

i usually find that practicing in from of the mirror or with a friend who is clueless about the area helps me a lot before conference presentations.... at least with the not being 'tongue tied...' or to put it in another way- managing to express what my research is about.

you could try that. .

deiseal -believe me, i totally know what you're talking about. even talking to my supervisor about my research takes a lot. imagine a whole viva! am planning to do lots of conference presentations, workshops, seminars etc from summer to be able to overcome this. i guess it's being told you're wrong all the time. after a while you just begin to expect it and therefore don't see the point of talking about you're research - my experience anyway

viva tomorrow - any advice please
J

goodluck!

you'll be fine. :)

ya, the sooner the best. the thot of a viva scares me to death.. anyone felt like that in their second year?

BORED!! of writing up!
J

speaking of boardom, a few things that have helped me having been;

going to the gym, seeing friends, going out...

get away from it for a while. that should renew your strength. i personally take weekends off on a regular basis, except when there is a deadline pending. i find that when i get back to it, i am more productive.

i really hated the thought of getting up this morning to face my thesis again. i can't really say i'm hating it right now, coz i have a clue of my argument, but there are those times when its all too much.

i also have that issue of reading too many papers and trying to put it all down and obviously not remembering much when am writing. i find that if someone asked me about it tho, i'd be able to explain it. my problem is remembering where i saw it.

i've decided to overcome that by incorporating each paper into my thesis as soon as i read it and then sorting the whole mess later. hope that works.

i just submitted some work. am kinda relieved, though its obviously not good work (coz its half done in the way of deep analysis which is only present in the first half). preparing for my sups harsh comments. anyways, the way i see it, its better than nothing.

Dont know what do
J

i always say, go for what you're passionate about and have deep conviction of - otherwise it would be easy to succeed and be happy in it.

most jobs seem to be like that. you start by doing the crappy tasks and then you rise up the ladder. have you checked whether this is the situation in your field?

i know a couple of people who've been RA's first and then gone on to do their Phds. so i don't see that as being a problem.

though am probably not the right person to be advising you coz i've never been in your situation, i'e. work or phd, then RA or phd. perhaps someone more experienced can elaborate further.

Should it really be this hard?
J

if it's any consolation, i pretty much have around 30 to read and incorporate by the end of tomorrow. thanks bakuvia.

hey Rosy,

am pretty much in the same situation here. why don't you read the abstracts of articles to see which ones you should read and then read the intros and conclusions of the ones you need to know about. that's what am doing as my deadline is on Friday as well. I'll read the full versions later.

hope that helps .

thanks for the consolation - am not the only one 16 months in and still struggling with a transfer report.

404 - i love the first one. didn't quite get what the second one was about. i'll be ordering for that soon, and probably a cheap card to say, wishing you a good valentines day.' that should do. :).

thanks 404,
Jojo.
