writing up - 2 months enough?
J

thanks Ann and Writing up. am thinking of writing something that is like a final draft - which i will update as i go along. so after each year - am to write a report of what i have been doing, which i will update in the end.

I have read around most of the areas (am in humanities), so i just need to write for most part of it, although there is a bit of reading to be done for one chapter. it may be wise to allocate more time - 4 months perhaps - or is that over the top?

chosing a supervisor - male or female?
J

sorry 404 and Dan B, i don't get the logic of that "Whether lipstick is more red, or apple is rounder" statement and how it applies to the question i asked.

just to clarify things here, am not suggesting male supervisors are better and female supervisors are crap - which is why my question is directed at relations with SAME SEX SUPERVISORS. My feeling so far is that with a female supervisor (if you are female) you run a risk of having the 'power' struggle - where the supervisor's critique is more directed to you as a person - according to my fellow student's experience, whilst on the other hand, a female supervisor could be more understanding - according to Ann. i've got no issues with male supervisors professionally they - to me - are easier to work with. My male colleagues on the other hand, with whom we shared supervisors - did not have a good relationship with the supervisor and often, the supervisors claimed not to have time for them. when it came to the rest of us, they had time for us. so...that's why am apprehensive about picking a female supervisor.

thanks for that Ann. anybody else had views on this?

writing up - 2 months enough?

hi, am wondering whether any of you has had experience writing up about 40,000 words of a thesis in two months? Be it MPhil experience or PhD thesis writing up experience. Did you manage in two months or would you allocate more time?

chosing a supervisor - male or female?
J

hi,

am just wondering how well you work with your supervisors. am female and i had two male supervisors. whilst we seemed to work well together - they didn't push me too much, i didn't feel they were as involved in my work as they should have been. i am now choosing other supervisors and am about to chose a female supervisor and a male supervisor. most of my friends say i shouldn't a female supervisor coz she'll drive me to the edge. what's your experience of working with same sex supervisors?

writing my literature review again - at the end of 1st year
J

hi, am having to do a lit review again, having found out that what had done before was not the best starting point for my thesis. my question is, how do i keep up with new publications in my area? how do the rest of you do this?

review chapter in 3 weeks, idiot supervisor, lack of motivation
J

hey HFJ. I just took a week off and am back refreshed. guess what, i had my review today and am getting other sups. i couldn't be happier. am sick of doing what other people tell me to do. hope someone had told me it would be this way earlier. anyway, optimism now! am gonna start writing that chapter now.

thanks once again.

how much weight to put on your sups opinions?
J

hey,

am just wondering how much weight you put on your sups bad comments and how you handle them? need help on this. some good news - my silly sup is moving uni. am definitely not going with him. the department has issues with him, his teaching and doesn't want to retain him. you can see the grin on my face :).

So I have a week to hand in this chapter!
J

hillyg - seems you are clued up about how a chapter should look like. you could help me here. what should be included in the intro? I see you've written something like, "references back to my lit review and the key arguments and aims for the chapter." what should be included in the body of the essay and the conclusion. this might seem pretty basic, but my supervisor and i can never agree on this.

review chapter in 3 weeks, idiot supervisor, lack of motivation
J

hey guys,

am so demotivated by everything, more so my silly supervisors who think am a crap student. last week i went to see my supervisor who trushed my work, tho he eventually admitted that i was on the right track. we are having battles on whose thesis it is and how it should be done. this silly sup wants me to do his thing - he's not from my field and is clueless about arguing from my perspective. my other sup doesn give a damn. whenever i wanna publish they put me down, now the paper i gave them was read by more than 10 people and presented to more than 20, changes made to it etc and they still think it was trash. i find it difficult to carry on. am beginning to lose interest in repeating things 100 times to people who have already decided that i do not know how to do my work. am so fed up. haven't worked since my work got trashed. people, i need you to lift me up. you're all i have right now. help!

Trouble with my Social Sciences topic

am also at the end of my first year.

Trouble with my Social Sciences topic
J

hey Bug, don't worry. i also have to justify my project next week after one of my supervisors feeling that am not making use of them, whilst my second one - not an expert in my field - but an expert in a related field reckons that am losing focus and I don't know what it is that I'm on about in my thesis. Thanks for the advice guys, i felt really angry earlier after what i had considered to be a breakthrough in my research was so easily dismissed. i've decided to defend it tho - after taking your advice. maybe its actually not as bad as it seems.
