The forum is really good for hearing about PhDs in other fields. I am in the biological sciences and I don't know anyone that is doing a PhD in the arts and humanities field, so it is really insightful reading about how these PhDs are written up, researched etc... and it is quite comforting to hear that we all have similar ups and downs and so on... It is also a great place to ask questions that you may be too embarrassed to ask your friends and colleagues !

It sounds like you have done the 'hard slogg' bit already then!

wear something smart, but not too smart, I would not wear a suit for example, but not jeans either! Just relax and try to be confident... Be prepared to defend or expand on your proposal... I think enthusiasm and initiative are the most important attributes to convey in an interview for a PhD position... I also got asked stuff like ' where do you see yourself in 5 yrs time' and 'why do you want to do a PhD?' etc etc.. I was told by one of the profs at our uni that one of the best answer to this is 'to gain training to become a researcher' after all, that is what a phd is all about...

I wrote up my stuff as I went along (my PhD is in the biological sciences) and I sent my supervisor eg the methods section or the results section as soon as they were done. this was all done with the intention of turning this stuff into a manuscript. So by the end of my first year I had most of my (exciting) results turned into a manuscript and ready for submission. The stuff that didn't get written up is now a pain in the proverbial, because I have to write it up for my thesis... I reckon you should try to write as much as possible and get as much feed back as poss- how will you learn or improve if you don't get this? try and write stuff that is of benefit for you sup and you, ie chapters/ or manuscripts..

Hi, I know this question may seem a little odd to say the least, but I am coming to the end of my PhD and questioning why, really why, did I choose to do this in the first place!
It would be great to hear any reasons from you guys...

I don't think it is that bad! may be at the end... but my experience at the beginning was way different. It was fun and not so stressful. Now, staring at computer screen all day is making my face wrinkly! but it will get better when I hand in...
Don't be put off doing a PhD - everyone's experiences are different! :-)

My best tip would be to write stuff up as you go. Even if it is just methods etc. Getting stuff written down is the best feeling and makes the writing up process a little less daunting. Obviously if you can write chapters/manuscripts this makes piecing a thesis together a lot easier too.

I think if you are having to work 70 hours per week, then something is seriously wrong...

I think the best advice that anyone could get during their PhD
is to write up as you go! So well done for doing just that!

If you have funding for 3 years, you should take 3 years.
