29th February is looming..

Well, I think there are reasons other than infidelity where divorce is a postive outcome. There's the obvious (child abuse, for example), but also if the couple really cannot live together without destroying the peace of mind of their extended family too. In my family's case everyone got dragged into it: grandparents, uncles, work colleagues.

However, this is one of those highly personal decisions where no-one can say what's right for sure. My point was just that I agree with Olivia that divorce is sometimes the right thing to do, and that isn't a failure to my mind.

Olivia, I'm so glad to hear you say that: I totally agree, but find I'm usually in the minority with my views.

I agree cos my parents had a horrendous marriage, yet refused to divorce "for the sake of you kids": as if the simple act of not divorcing somehow meant that their marriage was a success. It wasn't, and everyone would have been happier if they'd divorced and started again. I can still get mad when people treat divorce as a failure: it can be a positive step, especially where there are children involved who really should't be forced to witness their parents' misery on a daily basis.

OK, I'm off the soapbox now.

Bellaz, don't worry about every few pounds. If you are weighing yourself more than once a week then you risk getting obsessed, because weight fluctuates all the time anyway. I can be 5lbs heavier in the days before my period, but its all gone the following week.

Focus on regular healthy meals with a bit of junk food once a week, and you won't go wrong.

I'm with Bellaz...I have never once dreamed of wearing a floaty white dress and getting married in a big church do; I couldn't keep a straight face imagining myself in that situation.

Occasionally I feel vaguley gulity because I know my father wants me to be married with kids. On the other hand, my mother always advised against it.

comfort drinking tea

Ever since trying Rooibois tea, I've never gone back to normal stuff. It's tea without any of the downsides: no bitterness, you can't over-brew it, no caffeine, and it doesn't stain your teeth.

And the attitude of your supervisor is hardly going to help you; most of us don't work well under negative pressure. You're not alone

I know what you mean...I haven't had it as bad as you, but my industrial partners are in the habit of sending loads of samples and expecting results "yesterday"...they don't seem to get that you have other responsibilites too. Good work takes time!

The best thing that worked for me was to eat tonnes of vegetables with every meal. And cycling.

question of the day
J

The best is when they come to the office at 12.30pm, while you have a gob full of sandwich, and say "Oh, are you having your lunch?" and you say yes, you are indeed. And they don't politely bugger off, but just carry on asking questions all through your lunch.

I couldn't even figure out what Mellib meant..am I naive? Seemed like random bizarre words to me.

What are the good parts of doing a PhD?

For me, it's when you think you may have stumbled across something new, and start chasing it. That's really exciting. I also like the contact with our final year project students: they drive me nuts sometimes, but other times, when you see them making discoveries of their own, it gives you a nice fuzzy glow

Me! I have two academic and one industrial, and we get along great. They will tell me if I've made a mistake, or need to buck up, but in a useful way. And they're always encouraging of my ideas.

It always creeps up on you, weight gain. You never notice until you've packed on at least a stone.

Oh yes. I was mortified as an undergrad to realise I was 11 stone - last time I had checked I was 9.

I didn't diet as such, but made sure all my meals were based round vegetables, and only ate junk on Saturday. And started cycling to uni.

Within a few months I'd dropped to 8 - 8 and a half stone. You'll be OK. We've all been there!
