British Library User Tips

I didn't have to provide any evidence...just fill in a form asking why I wanted to use the library. That was it. Ten minute job.

Oooh actually; one more bit of advice: check that you're going into the correct toilet. It's not at all clear on one of the doors (1st floor); I went into the bloke's bog by mistake and saw more of a male colleague than I wanted to see. Took a while to live that one down.

That's a pity Zelda, I've been there lots of times and only ever met one miserable git; the others were all friendly. I really like it there.

I assume that if you have access, you've already been given the guidebook? My only addition to what's in the book is to double check that the resource you want is held in the St Pancras site; annoyingly, anything marked as DX (if I remember rightly) is held in Yorkshire so you have to order it in advance; useless if you only have a few days (happened to me once).

Other than that: go to the British Museum while you're in the area

another smiley? (apparently two words are two short for a title)

That's brilliant! We want that one.

I hate supervisory meetings
J

My supervisory meetings are great; coffee and cookies and friendly advice.

On the other hand, the monthly presentations to our partner groups can be terrifying; every bit of data I present gets thoroughly picked over by >25 people. Mind you it keeps me on me toes and I get some good advice; I know a few PhDs who's data is accepted unquestioningly by their supervisors but then is torn apart by the external examiners.

Any budding TV presenters

You never know when it may turn up...

When I was in industry a delegation of Chinese pharmacists -none of whom spoke English - were shown around the labs. I was minding my own business when I felt an arm around my shoulder; I looked up and one of the Chinese delegates was doing a big cheesy grin with his arm round me and all his colleagues taking photo's; don't know what that was about. I'm probably in some Chinese company brochure now.

Did you see that article in the Guardian about the correct pronunciation of Shitzhu? (It's Shee Tzuh apparantly, not Shit Zoo). Which means that a bulldog-shitzhu cross is a bullshee, not the other word

That's funny

when all this is done ... are you going to go to graduation or not?
J

Definitely...cos I look like crap on my B. Sc. graduation photo; I want a decent picture for my Ph. D.

Which Newspaper is best?
J

I read the Guardian. Used to read Independant but found it way too self-important and biased on many issues (specifically organic food/GM, medical issues and foreign policy). I want a paper to give me facts, not opinions (though the Guardain is heading the same way, it seems).

Fave books (non-fiction and fiction)
J

Glad you like it H; I loved it.

Wouldn't read a book about child abuse; who wants to be thinking about that just before falling asleep? I like books for escapism.

PhD Life and ....romantic and sex life....

I could never manage all my work if I just did 9-5. For me, 9-5 is spent just doing endless lab work (and arsing about on here, it is true), and my actual reading and planning has to be done in the evening. And working at least one day at weekends is inevitable if you want to keep on top of things, especially if you're sharing equipment.

rant: why people ruin library books with their notes and highlights etc.

No, it's a miniature schnauzer
