I just think if you're that much younger when you do your undergrad and PhD you miss out on most of the social side of uni which I think is pretty important. It's where you learn to be independent and make really good friends etc, can't imagine that happening when you are three years younger (at least) than everyone around you.

I just met a Russian girl who started her PhD two months ago and is only 18.

What do people think? Amazing that she has the ability to do a PhD so young, or she shouldn't be growing up so fast?

My undergrad degree is also different to my Phd (BSc in Pharmacology, PhD Molecular Biology) and a lot of the "basic" techniques are completely new to me. I ask *a lot* of questions, but then I figure my supervisor knew what degree I had so it must be expected for me not to know a lot of stuff.

When I lived in Scotland there was an abundance of healthy eating adverts on TV which I attributed to the poor diet they have up there. They also do deep-fried pizza, burgers, and even magnums! And Irn-bru being so orange cannot be healthy, and Buck Fast - honestly it's a different world up there!

I think maybe you should try and arrange a meeting with your supervisor and tell him your concerns. Maybe your supervisor thinks that the post-docs are overseeing all your work and doesn't realise this isn't the case. I'm doing a biology PhD and I have been "assigned" a post-doc and don't have much to do with my supervisor really. I think definitely say somehting sooner rather than later.

I actually went to a really good seminar on "how to read" with some good tips for what to write as notes (highlighting is not really very effective apparently!) and also taking regular breaks is parmount.

My boyfriend is 2 years older than me but wants kids later than me, my family menopauses young so I'm too scared to wait very long!

Nearly sacked apparently, had to write a letter of apology. Student left soon afterwards!

4 Hard Boiled Egg Yolks
4 tbsp Cream
1 tsp Prepared Mustard
¼ tsp White Pepper
Vinegar
Salt and Cayenne, to taste

Remove the egg shells, and pound the yolks in a mortar to a smooth paste.
Add the other ingredients, except the vinegar, stir well until thoroughly combined.
Pour in enough vinegar, a little at a time, to make it the consistency of cream.
The mixture will then be ready for use.

My supervisor once bought a girl in our lab a pink fluffy heavily padded bra for a secret santa present as she was flat-chested. She complained to the head of department about him!

I think it is superior to mayonaise in egg sandwiches and with tuna. Also surprisingly good on chips.
