My Friday thought for the day
K

I'm scared of tumble dryers, not for the energy, just because someone told me it ruins your clothes (same with fabric conditioner - I may be a little gulible) But.. washer/dryers still amaze me, you put in dirty clothes and you take out clean and dry ones!

Those bag for Life things are the best though, I always feel so happy taking back one when it's got a hole and getting a shiny new one as a replacement.

That was kind of my view, to split everything 60/40 or something seeing as my income is half what his is. But then why should he be paying more to live now I've moved in than he was before? We've kind of decided that I give him an amount each month and stuff like going out and holidays will be split seperately according to what we can afford. When I win my nobel prize money everything will be much easier!

I want to go home!

I'm sitting here on my own (no one in my office seems to work past four on a friday) waiting for someone elses experiment to finish jsut because they wanted to leave early, I'm regetting it already as I have a two hour commute home - I am too nice!

FREE PARTY, BRING YOUR OWN TUNES!

Well I'm all finished with my dissertation and the rail strike has been called off for Friday so I'm definitely more relaxed now. Definitely a G&T for me, and a twister ice lolly.

Surviving a PhD

Well I'm in London which makes things pretty expensive but my stipend is good. The other lodger is fine - he likes having a girl around as I clean up after him!

Had an argument with my boyfriend last night about money. How does everyone else work out how to split living costs etc when you are a PhD student and they are not? My boyfriend works for a bank so is on good but not outrageous money because he's only been there a couple of years. He owns a house and has two lodgers at the moment who cover the mortgage, one of which is moving out to make room for me. So do I pay the rent of the missing lodger? And how do we work out other living costs such as going out etc, I feel like I'm going to be struggling to finance a lifestyle I can't afford because my boyfriend earns more. Having a stressful day - being a grown up is difficult!

Thursday's particularly silly question - Cartoons

I used to love the cartoon of Animal Farm when I was really young. I obviously didn't understand it properly!

I always liked Bananaman because he seemed like a realistic superhero. And Superted was nice and innocent

Academia or Industry Dilemma
K

I agree with H, I'm doing a placement in industry now and there are very few people here without PhDs. There are a few people doing them part-time whilst working here, but that is definitely the hard way to do it and also doesn't seem to be held as highly as a FT uni one.
