I see exactly what you mean. I think one of the main reasons that Marx's theories have become too 'old-fashioned' is that they have been used so much, coupled with the fact that they aren't wholly applicable anymore in the post-industrial age. However, I do think that the basic critical aspects of his theories are still useful and inform philosophical debates such as those surrounding issues like structure and agency.

It should mean that you should be able to apply. I know a girl who comes from outside the EU who couldn't apply for this and that and she mentioned that if she was from the EU this problem would have been avoided.

Obviously read the small print as each and every source of funding might be different.

Thank you very much for your email. WE have not as yet heard back from ESRC. AS soon as I know I will contact all the supervisors.

Jes still says 'with council' which doesn't help anyone. I don't understand why they couldn't have a system whereby Jes sent out an automatic email with either a yes or no.

By the looks of it, you will be looking at ANOVA's and t-tests if your samples are large enough and meet the assumptions of these tests. If not, you can use non-parametric tests which do basically the same thing.

First of all, before you start doing any statistical analysis, make sure that you have a good idea in your mind or on paper of the independent and dependent variables. This will help you understand causality and how different variables interact.

If you are looking at the interaction with interval/scale variables (such as money, age etc) then you will be able to use ANOVA to compare the mean values of all the groups (the nationalities) if you want to see differences between them.

You will also be able to use logistic regression most likely, as well as chi-squares and non-interval correlations etc.

However, this all depends on what your variables are like. Sorry if this makes no sense.

You need to have a fairly good idea of what you want to do as a PhD and the approach an academic who would be willing to supervise the project. If they are willing to put you forward for the competition then they will most likely give you lots of support with your proposal which is the most important part.

I would think each university is different but where I applied from it was the department who decided who they wanted to put forward, and then they worked on improving your initial proposal into one that would likely woo the ESRC.

I already got a scholarship from my uni, and I was hoping to get this so someone else could take my university scholarship place. Now I sort of want someone else here who is relying on this to get it instead of me. However, I did apply for this before I applied internally so I wasn't to know beforehand.

I really hope you get it Mix. What is your proposed research about?

And just to ask something else, is everyone relying on this competition or do people have other sources of funding already secured?

I can't believe that in this day and age they rely on snail mail. Oh well.....

That's a good idea, but do you mean when we get the emails from our respective uni's, or when the ESRC tells our respective uni's (if we know)? This is assuming that both these things won't happen on the same day.

OK, I think we have pretty much tacitly agreed to post when we get our results. So I bet that it will be this Friday (6th) that the first person announces their news, either good or bad.
