Thinking of doing a PhD

Hey! You sound just like me! Go for it really do! Check out Surrey, they have an excellent programme on offer that I'm going for and there are so many studentships about to apply for. You could do it part time to start and then work your way up if finances are a pain. Im starting a family right when ill be starting my postgrad and working but with the right support around you it is possible. Ill reply properly after xmas, pm me if you like.

What is your masters in? Feel free to PM me!

working & funded pHd?
K

Hi great plans and I think you should go for it but after researching in depth about the funding I can provide advice......you are NOT allowed to work eg in a permanant job whilst on a full time funded phd prog. you can like the other post states in some circumstances earn up to 2k but you are not allowed a job as such. the earnings come from the teaching often and tutoring whilst at the uni...

I've come across people that did work and got caught out via national insurence and tax. they then had their award taken away coz simply you are being paid 13k tax free at least and there is no need to have a job, the stipend funds you.

Dont risk it. Go for the part time option, but as ive found few institutions are offering part time studentships and it will mean alot of personal research.

Hope this helps and best of luck

Starting a PhD this month

Hey well done on taking the plunge, im spending this year planning. I start a part time masters and PhD next year. This forum has been excellent and cant thank people enough for their posts. It helped so much for me to get to the stage I am at with a supervisor organised and applying for funding.

What is your subject? Have you got all your goodies pens, folders, papers?!!! Waterstones is giving out free year planners, very colourful ones! at the moment might help you with planning!!

Any other PhD mums?
K

Hi everyone

This is the thread that ive been hoping for!! I am actually not a mum...yet....I start a part time masters and PhD next october and will be likely starting a family then onwards too! My partner and I really want to start a family but I will be working full time, although part time once we have a baby. Ive been looking for advice and tips on how you all manage and if it is possible to work, have a baby and do post grad studies. Im starting to realise that it is possible but I must be realistic and well, much, much less lazy! Tommorow I am going to havea uni prep day. Im doing what I can this year (2011, starting a new job full time +shifts in 2 weeks!!) to get finances sorted, work on my application (for fees studentship) and back in reading mode etc. You are all wonderful and I take my hat of to you all for doing so well and working so hard. I hope you dont mind me gatecrashing the thread. Any tips for me would be great as a prospective mum studying!

Thanks again you

Anyone studying social sciences at Surrey? Phd or Masters?
K

Im hoping to be going there next sep and start masters sociology/criminology and really looking forward to it but it depends alot on getting funding, ie ERSC 1+3 or fees bursary or something like that! I will be part time too, working full time shift work.

Has anyone been there and completed the masters? Or Phd? Any advice would be great about the masters programme and the modules, assignments, anything really. I hope preparing over this year will help me lots and stay motivated.

Thanks so much
Tallie

Is it me!!!

And can anyone else suggest something to use or a system to keep track of references the best and easiest way.

Part-time PhD - is it possible alongside other commitments?
K

Hi there, im in the same situation sort of. Except ill be doing my masters then PhD part time in Criminology.

I had an interview/discussion last week with my future uni department tutors and they made it clear that it is possible but you do it part time but you have to be organised, diciplined and prepared from the start.

You need to understand your study and be expected to give up all those little things we do now to relax! eg. holidays should be avoided, use the time for your study, evenings spare time, be reallistic that your time needs to be dedicated to the study.

They suggested having a timetable at the start for each week, slotting in employed and other commitments. That said, I dont have a family (just the bf!) but i will be whilst doing my studies and they still said plenty of students manage. Its the key to your committment and how you keep yourself organised and diciplined throughout.

They also mentioned to do as much prior study before the course starts as possible.

So id say, dont panic, get a plan, and go for it!!!

Id like to keep in touch and see how you get on, so PM me if you like.
