Feeling ready for a Phd still having second thoughts
L

As I said to some other poster, you won't know until you try. Better to regret something that you've done in life than regretting not takin gthe opportunities when they were there. Go for it.

Thinking of going back into PhD - help and advise needed.

Quite simply you won't know until you try. Go for it.

Working bibliography for differentiation
L

I have my differentiation exam to pass into 2nd year. One of the requirements is to present a "working bibliography". Sorry for the confusion!

Working bibliography for differentiation
L

Ok so this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question but I was wondering how long a differentiation working bibliography should be?

I'm in the humanities by the by.

Thanks.

Best book/article to prepare for humanities differentiation?
L

I have my differentiation interview coming up in the next few weeks and I'm just preparing all the paperwork for that. I have been to a workshop on preparing for differentiation into 2nd year but I was wondring if anyone could recommend anything they have read which they thought was particularly useful?

Many thanks!

Routine
L

First and foremost everyone has their own routine and it takes a good few weeks to let it shape itself organically.

Im a humanities student so my mantra is write, write, write.

I get up 8.30am - breakfast.
And then get www.mytomatoes.com rocking at 9am.
Work til 1pm - lunch
Then 1.30pm til 4pm - more work.
4pm - 5.30pm - Gym
Bit of relaxing (dying!!)
Then Dinner
Then more work for an hour or so.
Then watch myself in a bit of Curb Your Enthusiasm or waste my time looking at crap (I said crap not porn!) on the net.
Then bed.

Highlights: Gym; writing as soon as I get up
Lowlights: Seeing things I don't want to see at the gym.

Unashamed article request

Here are the details:

Fausto Petrella, Freud's Style Terminology, Metaphor and Textual Strategies in the Works of Sigmund Freud. The Italian Psychoanalytic Annual 2007: 107-129

Thanks guys.

I'm hoping it'll be pre-tay pre-tay pre-tay good.

I might do the LD stare as well if anyone asks me any shit questions.

I can't be the only one wondering how it went on Friday larry ... did you manage to get those Tony-Bliar-esque hand gestures in?

Hi

Sorry for onloy replying now. Just got back home last night. I think it went pretty well. Using slides was defo a great approach considering the density of the papers presented before me and the heavy eyelids of a few people in the crowd. I was first after the coffee break so I guess I got lucky there.

I would do a few things differently and have learnt loads from watching others present (this was my first conference)

The organiser of the event asked me a question and i gave her an answer. And then I gave her the LD stare. Win!

Plus I was late getting to the conference and it was rush hour. The traffic would have been so slow. So I picked up a local hooker to use the car pool lane. Got there in 5 minutes. Pre-tay pre-tay pre-tay good.

Submitting a conference paper
L

I think using conferences as deadlines as such to complete certain parts of your Phd is very useful. My sup is American and his Phd back in the day was "Phd by publication" (which granted is not exactly the same thing as my idea in this post) but I've tried to set up conference opportunities to motivate me to finish chapters of my thesis. For example, the paper I am giving at the conference I am attending on Fri will be a distilled version of my Ch.1. A conference I'm heading to in March will be Ch.2. etc.

It's also pretty useful for getting your ideas out there and testing the water. The fact is nobody really gives a shit about what someone else is doing. We are all self-obsessed phd students after all.

I'm presenting at my first conference on Friday. I've been practising it and practising it.

I've got a nice powerpoint thing going on. Its about 15 slides and has the key quotes both from the text I'm discussing and also my key points - so these will pop up when I say them. I think it just makes it more engaging and visual.

I've got it down to now were I can almost say it without looking at my script and just flowing with the slides. But I'm sure it will be a different scenario on Friday.

Its the biggest cliche, but I just want to be natural, show my nervousnes if needs be, but at least be passionate and give it my best. Loads of eye contact, scanning the room, Tony Bliar-esque gestures, and pregnant pauses.

I am bricking it.

When exactly do you use footnotes in your writing?
L

Quote From BilboBaggins:

My PhD thesis was in the humanities too, and I had nearly 600 footnotes. I'd use them to include references (we don't have in-text references in my field, as in sciences, but put them in footnotes), and to expand on points that aren't strictly central to my argument. Basically if it had to be read it went in the main text. If it could be skipped, but was still somewhat important, it went into the footnote. And the footnotes all counted towards my final word count in the end.

Do footnotes generally count toward the total word count in the humanities or is it uni specific? I'm fucked (pardon my French) if they do count.

Contacting "expert" as you're doubting your sup?
L

That title sounds awful!

I get on really well with my sup. In the last 7 months I've rarely had any probs with him regarding my work or direction of research etc.

However my chapter 2 is a bit of an interdisplinary effort into a field that I have never read about before. Its not his field neither so I'm thinking of contacting one of the profs from that specific department in my uni.

Should I suggest this (in a nice way) to my sup? Or just go ahead? Or how would the otehr prof take it.

I've just been writing over the summer without being in contact with my sup and wondering if I'm writing anything worthwhile (especially after reading the thread were the guy/gal had problems in their viva - its freaked me out)
