i know plenty of people who went straight form undergrad to PhD, but then again I'm in my 2nd year as a research assistant without a PhD and I feel that there's no way I could have done a PhD without at least 1 yrs experience

it's generally either at least a 2i in your first degree OR a 2ii AND a good mark in your masters, eg a distinction

Well don't you have any exams during your masters that would give you an idea of what grade you are expecting?
When we apply to uni we don't have any results we just get in based on predicted grades and references usually

Both Manchester and Liverpool are very highly regarded unis

I would go for the one with the better philosphy department assuming the courses are comparable

I'm not sure I'd class Liverpool as having a lesser reputation.....its a very good uni and one of the original red brick ones
