Good morning!
Sounds like a mixed bag on a Monday for you Button, but how great that your sup likes your meth chapter, well done!
Goals for me over the next week are:
1. Write the final section in Chapter 3
2. Write the introduction and conclusion for Chapter 3
3. Mark my students
4. Receive feedback on Chapter 5
I think that will do for now! Ideally I'd like to get Chapter 3 and the marking wrapped up by Wednesday so I can get started on Chapter 6!
So specific goal for today is to get the final section in Chapter 3 written, the intro and conclusion shouldn't take too long but I have the afternoon off tomorrow to do some wedding related stuff (exciting!) and it's half term next week so I need to make every day count this week!
Good luck everyone, have a great day (up)
I don't really want to scare you but I'm supposed to be submitting in December and I am writing up now! I'm aiming to get a first draft completed by the end of June then constantly working on corrections between June and December. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time, especially if you and your supervisor have varying ideas of what is the right standard!
If you're finding your sup not particularly helpful, is there someone else you can seek advice from? Do you only have one sup or do you have advisors you could ask for advice?
As regards the respect issue, I don't really know to be honest. I think there is a stigma attached to being a student and it really depends on the organisation you're in and the individuals within it.
Hi Pineapple,
I am by no means an expert but the approach I am using requires me to be reflexive and reflective throughout my thesis and analysis. I think it's probably going to be about how you conducted the research, what went well/wrong, why it went well/wrong, what you would do differently and why. I would guess they want you to show how you have developed as a researcher. I think it will vary slightly depending on what kind of approach you've taken with your research. I think it might be worth pinging it past your sup just to check.
My thesis will have a section either in the conclusion or as an appendix discussing the use of reflection/reflexivity and the impact I had on my data as a dual insider/outsider. I'm writing the whole thing as a very open, confessional style. I hope that's somewhat helpful?
Hi all,
Oh no Button, that's scary! If it's any consolation it happened to me at the start of the year BUT it's not the end of the world. My sup just told me critique the paper within my thesis, examining the similarities and the differences. But I know how you feel - especially as so much emphasis is put on originality. Don't panic, have a chat with your sups and see what they think.
Hope everyone else has a lovely and productive day, I'm just chipping away at my chapter today, filling in the gaps (thanks Skig (up) !) and then I'm finishing early to have my hair cut! I've been working since about 7.30 this morning, it's amazing how much difference getting up that early makes (!) an epiphany at this stage in the game! I'll see how I feel tomorrow though!:$
Thanks both, hmm curious, I found the second one through a King's Fund database interrogation:
http://kingsfund.koha-ptfs.eu/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=56169
but I have a sneaking suspicion that the journal either doesn't exist any more or is called something else, cos I can't find it through a google search either... strange! I might try emailing the KF and seeing if they know what/where it is!
Thanks!(up)

Hi,
I wondered if any of you have access to the following papers:
Carlisle, C., Cooper, H. & Watkins, C. (2004) 'Do none of you talk to each other? the challenges facing the implementation of interprofessional education' Medical Teacher, 26(6) 545-552
Carter, C. & Harwood, J. (1996) 'Overcoming tribalism in primary health care teamwork' Primary Care Management 6 (10) 12-13
If you do I would be so, so grateful, thanks!
Good afternoon!
So it's going ok, but I have a little question for you all, how long are your literature reviews/theoretical frameworks? Mine originally was going to about 24,000 words with 26,000 for analysis but I now have an additional analysis chapter so I'm looking to cut from somewhere! Would about 3 chapters of 6,000 words each be sufficient? (So that I can steal the 6,000 words for my analysis which will obviously be tonnes more interesting to read!) I know a lot of it will depend on how succinctly I can word it, and the quality of my background reading. What's the average (if such a thing exists)?
Thanks!
I think it might be worth going back to your supervisors and asking for clarification as it sounds like you've been given some very vague feedback! Can you arrange to meet face to face/on the telephone and go over the proposal page by page?
Hi everyone,
Sounds like you've all been busy bees! Don't worry about going shopping Skig, as far as I can see from other posts pre viva you need to concetrate on trying to chillax as much as prep!
I'm sitting down now to work for an hour before lunch, I've been busy doing admin etc this morning so finally knucking down now! I've stupidly agreed to produce another chapter in less than two week's time, I am officially an idiot, why why why why why did I do this?! I have about half a chapter's worth once I pull all the waffle out so I am slightly worried...! So here we go! Fingers crossed I will be able to produce something half decent :$
Hope you're all having a good day so far!
Hi all,
I've been out all morning at meetings so I'm only just home now! I have a meeting with my DoS tomorrow at uni to talk about my analysis, I'm hoping I can argue my points convincingly so I'm going to spend all afternoon brushing up on grounded theory! I'll be back into writing on Thursday, it's good to have a bit of a break and do some other stuff.
I know the feeling Batfink, I have days where I feel like I'm not making any progress (see my posts from last week!) but I think it's just par for the course. Sounds like you've got a plan though! And I'm glad you had a break Button, you worked so hard last week! We'll all get there! :-)
Hi Batfink and Emmaki,
Chapter done, off to one of my sups to see if it's anywhere near the required standard! My guess is that it won't but we shall see!
Hope you're both having a good day, I'm just about ready to flop now!
Just checking in - I am wrapping up my chapter today, woohoo! I will get this one finished today then start working on the next one tomorrow. I've got around 18,500 words to do between now and March but I have a fair few meetings etc this week and next week. Hopefully I'lll be able to get it all done!
Hope everyone is having a good day :-)
I can only get from 1998 onwards, sorry:-(
I'm social sciences, I believe "pure" sciences have a lower word count, about half according to my university guidelines.
Thank you so much Ady, have virtual cake from me in extreme gratitude! :-) (mince)
