After the Viva - Corrections
L

I would recommend you speak to your supervisor about this, although I haven't been through viva yet, if they promised to send you the corrections by the end of March then they should have done. Easter has probably wiped their memory so I'd get your sup to give them a nudge.

Congratulations, anyway! (up)

Good morning!

Hope you are all well today! Good luck with the move Batfink, I think it's great that you're moving in together, it makes sense if you're seeing him when he's back anyway!

I'm going to be getting on with sorting out my references today, I am so annoyed that I've done it incorrectly, though the guidelines aren't really that clear when it comes to green/white papers so I don't know if I'm necessarily totally wrong! I wish there was just one way of doing references, it does annoy me slightly that there are different styles! Oh well! The good news today though is that I've had a library book out from a local university and I've just found out I don't have to take it back to the same campus (which is a pain to park on) I got it from, huzzah!

Goal 1: Find the missing info for policy references and add it in to the database

Based on the success I was having yesterday (i.e. none!) I think that will probably take me all day! :-(

That's all good though, is it the first time you've lived "together"? I do remember you saying Mr Batfink was off to work elsewhere during the week, it'll be good being in the city though. We moved from the countryside to the town a year ago and although I miss the green it is nice being closer to civilisation!

I've collated my references now but I've just found our reference guidelines and I've got some of the recorded incorrectly, ARGH! I hate, hate hate doing references so I'm going to have to leave it for tomorrow now incase I throw something at the screen! I'm going to do some admin this afternoon, I've still got a few loose ends to tie up from my fieldwork so I will mostly be getting on with that after lunch.

Good work on the transcribing - you're making great progress (up)

What did you do in your first year of a PhD?
L

BUT! I would hasten to add you shouldn't compare yourself to other students, everyone progresses differently. Presumably your university has a research student trajectory that you will be following, so don't worry! (up)

Wow, Psychbrainiac (have I spelled that correctly?!), that sounds like a lot of work! I agree with Miss Piggy, it really depends on your subject area. I am social sciences, in my first year I completed two 5,000 word chapters, presented a seminar and a poster at a conference, submitted ethics applications to the university and to IRAS, and completed an MSc module. Not to mention the reading! I read A LOT.

Oh my god! Nightmare! No I suppose at least there is that, and I do have a little time to shed a few pounds before then!

Anyway! I have achieved Goal 1, waahoo! I am so pleased I've managed to get that done as I really like having a couple of days away from a piece of work before I submit it, to make sure it's not a pile of (turkey)!

So, on to Goal 2, my least favourite job of checking references. Very, very boring but essential! Hope you're both getting on ok - and Batfink, moving in with Mr Batfink eh? Are you going to be far away from the uni? It doesn't tend to matter so much at PhD though does it? I hardly ever go up to mine now unless I really need something as it's time I need to write!

Well done you Batfink, you've done really well on transcribing, that's amazing speed! Also, I feel your pain Button! It took me ages to get into editing this chapter this morning but I've finally got going on it! And I am totally not doing very well at the dieting - I'm too scared to try my dress on before the day now! :$

Masters Before PhD ?
L

Hi,

I didn't do a Master's before applying for a PhD. I think initially I struggled in terms of writing, as I had a few year's gap between BSc and PhD so in terms of writing appropriately for the level I had quite a lot of catching up to do.

I don't think you need a Master's to do a PhD. You need to do lots of reading to find out as much as you can about your area. Also it might be worth seeing if your uni does any Master's modules that ARE related to your subject area/skills for PhD and ask if you can attend.

Ah I see, it all makes sense now! hehe!

Morning all,

Back to the grindstone after a weekend off! This is going to be hard going this week as I know I have next week, and the week after, off for a certain event.... ;-)

But I do have plenty to be getting on with in the meantime!

Goal 1: Edit chapter
Goal 2: Check references in chapter

I don't think I'm going to get these both done today as I'm pretty sure once I start editing it'll take me all day if not roll on to tomorrow...!

Hope you had a good Easter, I did have some(!) chocolate in the end so I am on a strict diet this week!

Looking for advice
L

You need to talk to someone at the university about this really, there must be a student support unit. I hope it gets sorted for you.

Well done Batfink with your transcribing, you're motoring through! I persevered & got there in the end!

Have a great Easter, see you next week!

Mine keeps going funny, it looks fine when I'm editing but once I save it, it goes all spotty! I hasten to add that I've finished my work now!

Oh dear, I made the mistake of getting going on corrections to another chapter which has already been reviewed, and I wish I'd started something less difficult now... Oh well!

Also, is there noone else you can approach for help? Is there a postgradute centre you can contact? Anything at all for postgraduate students? Who did you submit to? Can you contact them? I totally understand your concerns on this one, I hate it when people don't reply, when you're relying on them to do something for you.

And - congratualtions on passing! (up)
