Sorry to hear you've had so many problems! Can you ring your supervisor instead or physically go to uni and see him? The thing is, it is Easter now and most academics are away for the majority of that period on leave. Try ringing him today if you can and catch him before he goes, as you need an answer.
Thanks Ian, that's really interesting! I just changed my reference list to Old English, hehe it looks wicked! I might do a bit of an experiment with my sups and send them chapters in different styled fonts and see what I get back (I hope they're not reading this!)
I will go and dig out my submission rules now, I do remember reading them a long time ago and I'm pretty sure it is a choice between arial and tnr so... we shall see!
Thanks Batfink, I now have a complete (but rough!) draft of my chapter, which considering how I was feeling earlier in the week is a major achievement, so hurray!
Hope your transcribing is going well so far, it is a bit of a laborious task but you'll get there! (up)
Thanks for that, but I didn't really mean "thesis font" specifically, I was curious about what fonts people used in their thesis...!
Ooh procrastination, here I come...! Thanks Holly!
Agreed, a change is as good as a rest, it has been quite amusing to watch yours change! I'm quite enjoying the mining-santa-esque vibe you've got going on at the moment :p
I think Calibri is a nice half way house between Arial and TNR, I might have a play with it today...!
Spoken like a man who has asked! What profile pic were you thinking of then Delta?! Your avatar has undergone some pretty drastic plastic surgery over the last month or so, hehe!
Morning,
That's pretty good going Batfink, if you keep going at that pace you'll have your interviews transcribed in no time at all!
My other half always finds it weird that I have a fairly "serious" job yet I watch rubbish TV programmes and read very light hearted literature in my spare time, I suppose I spend so much of my time thinking about serious issues the last thing I want to do at the end of the day is think any more! Hence watching/reading things that require very little brain power. It's my way of saying, here you are brain, turn off now!
Well I made some great progress yesterday so I've now only got section 3 to work on, to get it to a state where I can leave it over the Easter weekend then come back fresh next week to edit. hurray!
Oh and some good news on a non topic related item - the money has reappeared in my account now, phew! I'll just have to wait and see if the bank are going to charge me now! But thanks to Button's advice I have written proof that it's not my fault! (up)
Ah happy birthday Ady! (gift)
That's interesting, I was playing around with a few fonts this afternoon and it's amazing the impact the font has on how you perceive the text. I agree that Times probably looks more authoritarian, though I like the roundness of Arial! I wonder if anyone has ever submitted in Comic Sans...!
I did a brief search through the forum for font but it doesn't seem like this has been discussed in relation to theses before - what did you all use as your font? I'm on Arial at the moment (I'm a 1980s child) but I don't think my university specifies which one it has to be in, just so long as it's clear. I confess I have also recently read "Just My Type"!
So I'm curious, what font are you on? And what do you think it says about you?
Ah have a great time Button, yes I think I will be insisting on some flowers in the next few days! Have a great birthday and Easter weekend! P.S. what lovely presents!
Hope you're having a good afternoon Batfink, I've managed to get through Goal 2 now as well so I'm just doing some admin stuff now. I'm struggling with some graphics at the moment, I'm not very creative y'see!
Good work both, sounds like we've all had productive days! I think mine only remembers my birthday because it's on new year's eve! I have heard of men who go too far the other way - I know someone whose partner brings her flowers every single week, I think the novelty would wear off and it would become less romantic that way. Having said that, it would be nice to have some flowers (I may hint heavily to the other half about this later...!) I totally agree with you Button, I think just spending time together is special, especially when you both work full time. Though I think I'd be pushing to have lunch bought for me somewhere nice if it was my birthday, hehe!
I think previous experience in audio typing is worth its weight in gold when it comes to doing qual research!
Right, well I'm off to do Goal 2 now, I think this is going to take me a substantial amount of time this afternoon as I'll be amending work that originally sat in an analysis chapter (it's to do with government policy) so it'll need a fair bit of tweaking!
Hi Button, ah bless you! Is it likely that the hubby has something up his sleeve?
I don't really do exercise first thing either, I like to get my working day out of the way then use the workout/walk/bike ride to get the stress of work (and PhD related jargony language) out of my system before my other half gets home. It sounds like you're making progress though so that's good!
I've managed to get through the majority of Goal 1 now, it's messy but it's all there, more or less! I'm going to have a rummage downstairs now for some lunch, I really need to go to the supermarket but I can't really be bothered today!
I've spoken to them again today and asked for written confirmation so that has calmed me down a bit!
Good luck with the transcribing Batfink, mine were about 30 minutes in length and on average it took between 2 and 4 hours to transcribe, I'm quite a fast typist though (I spent a few summers inbetween uni terms as an audiotypist!). It also depended on the speed of speech from the interviewee! Good luck with it!
Fingers crossed you get your chapter done tody Button! I want to get this one fully drafted by tomorrow but we shall see! If we don't see you tomorrow, a very happy birthday in advance! (gift)
Thanks Delta, and you will get something eventually. I think it's just an unfavourable job market at the moment and a lot of companies, from my experiences with my partner's job hunt, have someone in mind before they even start the recruitment process, which is absolutely not fair! Either that or you've got totally overqualified people applying for jobs and the employer gives it to them instead of giving someone new a chance! I really hope it starts to pick up soon, fingers crossed for you!
