They would get laughed out of town! No experience other than being told to look on wikipedia for simple explanations of difficult concepts but NEVER EVER cite them!
Hi Batfink,
Hope you get on ok today, it sounds like you're making great progress so keep it up! I'm doing some literature searching and reading today, I've got about a week to work on changes to one of my chapters before it will be reviewed by my sups again. Good luck with your revisions today, it's quiet here on the forum isn't it! Where is everyone?
Hi all,
Hope you are all well, I confess I had one of those avoiding days yesterday as I'm not doing very well again, I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this chapter but hey ho! I hope you're all making better progress than I am! :-)
Congratulations! You'll have to change your name now! Looking forward to hearing the story! (up)
Morning,
Sounds like you had a busy day yesterday Button! I know what you mean about spending ages on something oly to remove it after, GRRR! Nevermind though!
And although you didn't get the job Batfink it sounds like they really liked you so it'll be well worth applying in future.
Hope everyone else had a good day yesterday, I made some progress with Chapter 3 but half of my sup's feedback has gone missing! Very odd! So I'm just kind of guessing what they wanted me to do...! More of the same today!
Hope you all have a good and productive day today :-)
Morning,
Hi Button, glad you've had some nice news, you certainly deserve some good news! I totally know what you mean about parent's houses and slow computers - I can't stand using my Mums PC, by the time it's warmed up enough to open Word I might as well have written the thing by pen and paper!!!
I'm mainly going to be prepping for supervision tomorrow and beginning to make some amendments to Chapter 3 today, the more I can get done the better really. So hopefully I will make some good progress with that today!
Hope everyone is having a good day (up)
Hi Blackbyrd,
I'm sorry I didn't see your post about passing your viva, belated congratulations!
It sounds like you need some clarification about what your actual result is - it might be worth going back to your supervisor/examiners. I don't really understand how you can pass a viva and get R&R - does it actually say R&R on your letter?
Please don't be displeased with your achievement - you've done so well to get to this stage. Be proud of yourself and tackle those corrections one by one, Dr Blackbyrd (up)
Hi everybody,
Hope you are all well this morning, good luck for your job interview Batfink, I hope you get it too, and glad you had a good conference! I also hope everyone got their bits and pieces finished yesterday! I finished my list of corrections so I'm just going to go through the chapter one more time to check for any obvious spelling/grammar etc then I'll print and go over it on paper. Am I the only person who finds paper much easier to proof on? I hate wasting paper but I find that I miss things if they're on a screen so I usually print a copy (double sided, 2 pages to a side) to proof!
Anyway, hope you are all having an excellent day!
Hi Stressed,
I think what you're feeling is completely natural - I've read accounts of people on here who have been through exactly what you're going through now. It's a huge momentous event in your life, and something you've been working on for 3+ years, so no wonder you're worried about it! I think we all feel like frauds, deep down, so you're not alone! I read through some of my work and think, OH DEAR! Your sups wouldn't have let you submit if you had no chance of passing, and you've worked really hard to get to this point. Try focusing on the positive, you're bright, you've finished your thesis, and this time next week you'll be Dr Stressed!
As I'm not quite there yet (I'm currently amending my draft) I can't give you any specific coping mechanisms, but it might be useful to try and get busy with something else for a couple of days. Put aside some time every day to go through the thesis and then after that do something fun/interesting to take your mind off it. Buy a DVD boxset of something you wanted to watch and chill out with some ice cream, go for a run, swimming, whatever. But it will drive you mad if you just think PhD for the next week and nothing else!
Best of luck for next week - we'll all be here to congratulate you! (up)
Hi all, just checking in, I was out at meetings all day yesterday but I'm back in the office today working on Chapter 1. My one goal today is to get my corrections on this chapter finished!
Hope everyone is having a good day (up)
Hi Bellagg,
I think what your supervisor means is that you will probably pass if you submit in October, but that you might walk away with a different outcome i.e. more corrections post viva than you would if you had more time to work on it. I don't think what he's said is bad, it's usual to get "corrections" post viva - a viva outcome is likely to be pass with minor corrections, pass with major corrections, revise and resubmit or fail.
It's extremely rare for someone to get no corrections post viva, it might help if you read your university's guidelines on viva and viva outcomes.
I hope that's helped, good luck with submission!
Hi Button,
I think we're all guilty of procrastinating on one thing or another, and it is daunting when you have to start a new project, but it's great that you've taken that first step of writing the abstract! I wouldn't tell your hubby about the pie either, what he doesn't know won't hurt him, hehe!
I've managed to get six things ticked off of my to-do list, hooray! So I am now going to get some lunch then spend the afternoon doing some reading or something - I'm still struggling to look at the screen for too long after having sinus pain so I'm going to rest my eyes. Hope you're all getting on well!
Thanks Skig and Natassia, yes I'm feeling better thank you, a bit groggy but definitely better than I was. It's taking me ages to work through this one correction though which is really annoying! I hope you're all having successful days so far! :-)
Morning all,
I know the feeling well Skig, lots to do and not much time to do it in, just approach it one thing at a time and you'll be fine! I'm just carrying on with my list of corrections, I'd like to get at least another 4 done today if not more.
Hope you all have a good day!
Welcome Gary_Scientist, hope you find the One Goal Thread useful and have a successful day!
And hello to you Button, hope you are well! I am 4 tasks through a list of 16 so I'm making reasonable progress, the one I'm working on currently is a bit tricky though as I'm trying to incoporate information that I had previously removed which is tedious but hey ho! How wel organised to start Christmas shopping now! I am dreading it slightly this year, but only because 1. I have lost some weight which I put on post wedding and I'll probably put it all back on again because of all the yummy food at Christmas and 2. My funding ends after Christmas!
