Great news Dr Elmeo!! Congratulations! 9 months until I resubmit and I only hope I get the same result!!! Thank you for inspiring me.

So, after the chaotic situation of receiving a R&R thesis that I must submit early next year I have received my first 'revise and resubmit' article for publication...

I feel double the looser today.
Working on that article had made me a bit more confident but now I have totally scr*d up in both the thesis and my first major publication, for which (both) I put massive effort and time) I feel like a total loser.

Moreover, no papers of mine become accepted in major conferences on my topic but as a poster only.

It's like academia is showing me the exit.

I haven't done but I have been about to do so several times. The first time I met my supervisor after the r&r verdict I nearly passed out... and I nearly cried of course.

I am pretty sure there is a way of him going back to his course. Someone I know did that before at a university in Britain.

I never get asked 'why' but I am always asked 'have you finished yet?'. The fact that I am now doing year 5 and I have to revise and resubmit the thesis doesn't help. It means that my PhD trip may take another year. Saying that, I am very rarely asked this question. However, sometimes in family gatherings people ask me why I have no children yet (I have been married since 2007 and I am now 33). When this happens, I always smile and change the subject.

Straight after I received the examiners report and the R&R verdict I met my supervisor to discuss what needs doing. We carefully read through the requests of the examiners and there were three important points on which there was a disagreement between my supervisor and the examiners. My supervisor thinks that what the examiners ask in certain cases has no point whatsoever and that I should NOT follow their advice / request. On the contrary, when I resubmit my thesis, he says that I must write to them WHY I did not do what they asked me to do... and justify it fully...

To make a long story short, I was told by the supervisor that essentially the examiners created more problems than the thesis has...

And a word of advice before I close this post: this is what happens when one is given a famous Professor with 30 years of research as an external. Avoid them like the devil.

Whatever happened happened, but now what?

I have been working on the corrections of my thesis and some of the questions / corrections given to me by my examiners are extremely vague and do not specify in detail what exactly needs doing... There is a lot of waffle in their comments...
The wording and the expressions they use are vague, comments are extremely generic and their research questions range from not-clear to non-existent...

I asked the supervisor about what he thinks they mean and he was also extremely baffled... He has been guestimating several points the examiners have written on that report...

Am I only one facing this problem? Can I interpret their questions / request for corrections the way I want... or at least the way my supervisor understands them? Are their generic questions and comments pro or con my resubmission? At the end of the day, if I resubmit and they say to me that this is not exactly what they wanted me to do in a certain case I could say to them that a) This is how I interpreted the request and b) this is how my supervisor interpreted their request... and advised me to handle this... On the day of the viva there was nothing said about these requests in order to enlighten the examiners report. I also have a second question but this will be a second post.

I am feeling worthless today. Stuck with a revise and resubmit I can see everyone else progress in life but me. People graduate, get married, have children, do an academic career and at the moment I cannot get on with my life. I am on stand-by... or pause mode... :-( Suddenly all my dreams for the future feel so ... distant and a PhD graduation is like a fainted dream...

I have been extremely depressed while doing my PhD. However, what works for me is volunteering for the local community, for a few hours a week. This keeps me busy, gets me out of the house and allows me to get to know new people and make friends.

Well done and congratulations Dr!!!!!!! Your post is ever so encouraging to me as I have also received the re-submission verdict. It shows me that it is possible to resubmit my thesis successfully if I work hard.

I wonder if this applies. Has anyone managed to receive funding for a trip and participation to a conference by their department while being on 'thesis awaited'?

Well... if you go on the turnitin website it gives you the option of scanning it individually too, but I am not sure I would bother after reading the previous posts. If we know our work and we know that we do not plagiarise, then we do not need some software report to tell us that. Well, if you wish to scan it for plagiarism anyway, now, that is something you should ask your supervisor about. He may be able to advise you.

hahahah, I was adviced to leave everything back and explore the world. Not a good advice for someone who must resubmit a thesis, I suppose :)

I think that you can safely use the title now! Congrats by the way! Keep a low profile though before the degree congregation or the postage of your degree. You can apply for jobs and put it on your CV with an asterisk *explaining the situation. Do not use your title online though, until May time. Just to be on the safe side. :-)
