how to regain confidence after R&R
M

Any ideas, tips, etc. would be greatly appreciated. As you can imagine, my confidence is completely lost...

R&R Has Made Me Crazy. Anyone Fancy Talking Some Sanity Into Me? :-)

I don't think your supervisors and your examiners want you to fail. If they say it is time to resubmit, then you should trust them.

Business cards & online info

I only include my academia profile in my business card, no twitter or facebook as I do not consider them academic....

Submission after R&R- holiday?
M

My ideal holiday after I resubmit my r&r thesis is to catch up with friends in foreign lands... Maybe you should do the same.

I got an R&R, and my supervisor encouraged me a little bit by saying that so long I do what the examiners want, I will pass. Don't they give you the option of further minor corrections? They do in my uni.

It is absolutely normal, considering the fear that we have received after r&r. Surely though, your revised thesis would be better than your first submitted thesis. Chances are that the examiners will be perfectly happy with it; and if not, minor corrections will do the trick.

I HATE r&r too

Post viva- just over six months left to complete corrections

After my personal R&R I sympathise. I think that we will manage. Just over a year for me, still haven't opened the thesis document. Every time I try to work on my thesis I get panic attacks. We will get there.

How much publishing did you do

before you handed in your thesis?

R&R: Encouraging words
M

Hi there

For us R&R students who are disappointed, confused, disheartened and the like, I found that the following link can give some generic instructions on how to act if one receives from minor to major corrections (including resubmission) - and some encouraging words to go with it.

Bottom of page: Dealing with corrections and revisions: http://www.reading.ac.uk/internal/studyadvice/postgraduates/sta-vivas.aspx#corrections

On an off, this advice would be useful to students from any university.

Quote From hazyjane:

To be honest, if I was in your position I'd far rather have those 2/3 chapters as papers than as thesis chapters. A thesis gets read by a handful of people - papers will have a far wider readership and give your career a head start if you want to stay in academia.

How is that work wasted? You've got ample material for a PhD PLUS potential publications. Win win. Some people struggle to get even one of those covered. It's not like anyone is saying those chapters are rubbish and you wasted your time doing that work. I don't really see the above situation as 'letting go' of content as much as 'reassigning to a more appropriate audience'.

Another bonus is that it's a relatively easy/tidy way to reduce your word count without having to painstakingly comb through looking for sentences/paragraphs to shorten etc.

A thesis can be a means to an end. It doesn't have to be the end in itself.

great post!!! Thank you dear colleague! That is very inspirational!

Hi Pineapple!!

Well, since you know that we both experience the same problem, I do face the same scenario... but do not worry too much about that. What I was told by my examiners was that the bits I am not going to use I should publish them later as journal papers... Could you do something similar? BTW, I have to delete about 15.000 words from mine and re-write them (though I have not received the examiners' report yet).

Anyone else looking to give up PhD to become a chef?
M

I think that if I had not started the PhD, if I had never gone to university even, I would be a proper housewife... That would have been my main role in society: mother and wife and housewife. Cleaning, cooking, patisserie, gardening, vacuuming, bearing children, raising children.

I think I am glad I went to uni...

Would you quit if you got an R&R?
M

Hi there Aipwith brains. Don't be disheartened. I have recently received an R&R and I am fighting to get the PhD. Perseverance is what we need.

Blue Monday today
M

Psychologists believe that the third Monday after the new year begins (i.e. today, note that this day is called 'Blue Monday' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Monday_%28date%29) is traditionally the most depressing day of the year.

So, how's life treating you today?

I am feeling OK today btw, but this is because I keep myself busy.

Have you always been a good student?
M

I was really bad at school. I hated school. I loved university though. I learnt to love learning while in academia.
