I would certainly consider Liverpool - however, the 4 year PhD closes today, although there is an MRC 4 year PhD which is open until mid February. However, the research in physiology doesn't seem to be very neuro or immuno-related. I'll check Dr Gordon out though...

Well ideally neuropharmacology, but I also have an interest in immunology. Anything in the molecular field really - I nearly applied for a 4 year Wellcome Trust PhD in Cellular and Moelcualr Physiology at Liverpool, but decided not to.

There are three possibilities here. Either you're taking it too badly, or your supervisor was trying to put you in at the deep end without meaning to upset you, or your supervisor is nasty.

I doubt the first one is true, so it's one of the other two. What is your relationship with your supervisor like? Do you get on? And is hte normally like that at journal club meetings?

If the car was Charlize Theron (or more likely Kirsten Dunst or Kate Winslet) then I'd test drive but never return to the dealership.

I have a friend who just finished her PhD in schizophrenia physcology, and she went to a conference in Switzerland. She spend 2 days at the conference and 5 snowboarding! I guess you'd have to justify it to whoever is funding you, but if they say for you to go, then you may as well. Enjoy it!
