Anyone else having trouble getting back into it after the break?

Ibrik? Sounds like building materials made by Apple...

Oh dear, I've been at work for too long today.

Applying - question
M

There's a 4 year PhD programme I saw in November when I was browsing different universities, and about which I emailed the relevant department. They've just got back to me, inviting me to send a CV and referees' details as they're currently shortlisting. I have my eye on another supervisor at a different uni, although he hasn't got confirmed funding yet, so I'm wondering what to do.

This 4 year programme is in Liverpool, which isn't somewhere I'd normally have considered, but the department has a very good reputation, and the 4 year nature of it appeals as it would give me a greater training and also allow me to defer choice of supervisor and project until the end of the first year, when I know more about the department and what they do.

But, considering that it woulnd't be my first choice IF I got the other PhD I'm hoping for, and also that Liverpool isn't top of my list of places to go, is it worth applying?

Bye Apollo!

I don't know what area you research in Apollo, but I'm in medical sciences. If someone was to start some research using an experimental protocol, and then, even after getting poor results, soldier on stubbornly without changing methods, that would be stupid, right? But to change methods would fit them into what you're calling a "quitter".

Traits of a successful PhD student?

I'd say that this isn't really a problem. After all, isn't development of confidence to present research to acadmeics one of the objectives of a PhD?

Hey Sosa,

I've been applying for PhDs, so a bit different, but I've emailed and writeen to some universities and not received replies. If this happens, you can be guaranteed that I won't be applying - if two emails to different peoplein the same department don't get replies, I assume they won't be that botered about me when I'm studying there either.

My friend just quit his PhD after 11 months...
M

Anyone who's on the verge of quitting, can you say a bot more about what you do, and why etc? FWIW, as I've mentioned on other threads, I quit before I started, but am hoping to start a new project this September...

I don't know too much about it myself, but here's a fact page I found online, which might be of some help.

Any neuroscience PhD students here?

"Oooh that's all very exciting There's still a neuroscientist in me somewhere "

There's a dirty joke in there somewhere...

Thanks Ratty. I'll be sure to mention it when/if my interviews come up...

Well, I don't think the "supervisor to be" is too happy with me. He certainly wasn't when I withdrew, as it was late notice. Also, I didn't give him the full details of why I withdrew, mainly because I didn't want to, which meant he didn't have the full picture, so I can't really blame him for being angry. Anyway, I want to move on anyway, and I've got my eye on a supervisor in Birmingham. Just have to hope he gets the funding though, and then chooses me...

Well, I applied for a PhD at the Centre for Synaptic Plasticity in Bristol - a top place. However, their way of doing it is slightly different to most places, in that they decide which students to take, and then distribute the projects. While the project I was allocated interested me, I wasn't sure it was totally what I wanted to do. Also, I'm from Preston, and so I only wanted to go that far away for a project I was 100% certain about, so in the end I turned it down, and later got a better one from Sheffield, although obviously I'm not doing that either!

Ratty, which University are you at? My first offer, which I declined, was from Bristol...
