Hi Al, thanks for the reply, I will try and explain my problem a bit better.
I have recorded some data that is amplitude against frequency (from 30 to 200 MHz), I want to plot frequency on the x axis and amplitude on the Y axis. The first set of data has frequency recorded with a step size of 60Hz, the second set of data has the frequency increment of 50 Hz, so when I rty to plot the two sets of data on the same graph, 1) I have more data cells on the 50 Hz version and obviously they then dont match if I try and just plot them directly.
data set 1
Frequency Amplitude
30.000 10.8
30.060 11.7
30.120 10.9
data set 2
Frequency Amplitude
30.000 10.4
30.050 11.9
30.100 10.2
What I was hoping to be able to do to merge the data so I can plot it on one graph.
Hope this is a bit clearer, and hopfully youcan give a idea how to do it .
Thanks
Max
I was hoping someone can give me some help with a problem I have with some data I am trying to analyse with Graph pad Prism.
I have 2 data sets, one set has an increment between subesequent x values of 0.06, the second set has an increment of 0.05. If I wanted to plot these two data sets on the same graph (using the above values as the X value) is there a way of getting Graph Pad to interpolate the results. They both have the same range (30-200), but obviously 1 of them has fewer actual data values.
I am hoping this is possibel and some one can tell me how to sort it out
Thanks

I started last October and am getting into things now,I read here and elswhere that people recommend writing from early as possible. My question is what approach others have used for this, currently I try tyo write as often as possible, ususlly this has involved breaking the background material for my subject down into small sub headings and writing notes (with references included where applicable) on each of these topics. Would I be better working through the great pile of papers I have and writing individually on each paper or is the method I am currently using one that others have used with success?
Any thoughts would be gratefully received :-)
Thanks
Max
Hi Satchi, I use Texniccenter to compile my Latex code, I lloked at a few others but liked the operation of this the best. The only slight disadvantage I see of Latex (as opposed to Word) is that it isn't WYSIWIG so you have to compile it to a PDF before you can see what it looks like but I would rather that than spend the night pulling my hair out (I haven't got much as it is) trying to work out why Word insists in moving things or changing things I haven't told it to.
The book I downloaded is "the not so short introduction to Latex" by Tobias Oetiker, you can download it. This gives a good introduction to Latex, for any other problems I get stuck with I just search directly online and generally come up with an answer within a couple of minutes.
As others have said, if you in an engineering/ maths/science field you should see the benefits with equations and the likes , if not for me the formatting consistency still out weighs having to learn how to use some new software.
Give it a go and just shout if I can help with anything

Hi Satchi, not sure about the compatibility between Mac and PC but I would have thought they should be. I started using Latex in November and although I am still learning I would say it took about a week to get to a point where I was fairly comfortable using it ( I am part time so thats not a week of actual work, I would say probably half a day or so if I was on it all the time. I wouldn't go back to Word now (unless its just to type a quick note where the formatting doesn't matter. But as far as prodcing a professional looking report for me Latex wins hands down, I am no longer wrestling with Words "Features" that we all know and love.
Give it a go you may be converted you never know.
If you want to know anything else let me know
Max
Hi Eve, as a bit of extra information for your survey, I met my now wife on a chat room, we have been married for 2.5 years and have a 2 year old daughter, so it is possible for people to meet genuine people on-line, just thought this may give you a bit of extra detail

Hi CB , I use Texnicenter and find it pretty good, I had a look at some of the other compilers but opted for Texnicenter. Its teh same as any new software it takes a bit of getting used to but once you have got the hang of it its not too bad. There are some very good guides on line, but I generally just search for the particular function online when I get stuck, I generally find the answer reasonably easily. As I said I am learning myself but if there is anything you get stuck on with Texnicener drop me a mail and I will try and help out.
All the best
Max
Hi Cb , I am still a relative newcomer to Latex but find it is much better than Word. After spending more time messing with formatting trying to get my Lit review done I decided to give Latex a try. I am still learning when it comes to adding graphics, tables equations etc but am getting better the more I use it. It is good to be able to just concentrate on the content not the formatting. Give it a try and see how you get on, I won't be going back to Word ay time soon, except for at work where I don't have a choice.
Good luck

Thanks Mathkitty, I have ben working sinc I put my post without any problems, until I just tried to run Bibtex and I know get the same problem again (the PDF is the previous document I was working on). The current ile I am using is a template I have just downloaded so it is the form of tex files not a project, is this possibly what is causing my issues do I need to convert this into a project?
Thanks for any advice you can offer
Max
Can someone help me out , I am trying to set up a new write up and am getting strange things happening when I am trying to compile the files. Soemtims Texniccenter compiles the file I am working on and shows the corrct PDF file, I then mae an amendnment in one of the chapters and try compiling the main file again and thee PDf that is shown is that of an old project that I don't even hav open. A I doing something stupid (probably) or is this a known "feature" of Latex / Texniccenter. Pleas can someone give me some pointers as it is doing my head in, I sat down with good intentions of getting some writing done this morning and the only thing constructive I have managed is this post.
Thanks

Hi , I have several data sets with three columns of approximately 5000 cells each. I need to be able to plot graphs for these data sets and do some simple analysis on the results, can anyone suggest an alternative to Excel as I don't like the way the latest version has been designed. Are there any open source / freeware versions that may be more intuitive. Thanks

Can I ask a question to Teek, I am also studying in a scientific area (electronic engineering) and use a standard log book. I recently went on a introduction training day and was advised against using a log book as by the time you get more than a few months in you will end up with several log books where the information is in date order rather than being in subject order (as would be possible if using aring binder with loose leaves). Do you find you have any difficulty finding info that you may have written several months or maybe a few years earlier, do you use some sort of index system? I have spoken to someone who uses One Note (this then has the ability to search electronically within entries) but am slightly cautious about using a totally electronic note taking format in case of lost data ( i know backups will help but there is always a chance of forgetting to back up just before a crash happens). I would be interested on your thoughts
Ps Sorry for slightly highjacking this thread
Thanks
Max

I didn't say in my initial post what I am doing, I am based in the electronic engineering department, but there is a fair bit of cross over into the physiscs department. I am part time researching the method of testing the electromagnetic interference produced by cars.
