Congratulations on getting the studentship! :) I have no experience of accommodation in London (being a bit of a country bumpkin I can't imagine anything worse ;-)), but have you tried the university's accommodation office? They might have a list of 'recommended' letting agents etc? There will probably also be somewhere where other students can advertise for shared houses etc.

Hi, I did my first degree in international studies at UEA, though that was back when it was called 'Development Studies'. :) I loved the course and would highly recommend it. However, that was a while ago now (quite a long while ...) and I don't know how/if it has changed.

As regards the 'rudeness' you have encountered, I really can't comment on that. When I was there everybody was very friendly and helpful. I have lived in the UK for more than 20 years and I have to say I really don't find the British rude at all! There are individual exceptions, of course, but you find that in every country. Maybe try contacting them again? Have you just been talking to one particular person? Maybe it's worth trying somebody else?

I did my first degree at UEA. While I can't comment on the course itself (I didn't do American studies - but I think it's has a very good reputation), I loved my time at UEA and really enjoyed living in/near Norwich. It's a relatively small but friendly city and I remember it as being quite 'studenty' with lots of arty things, gigs etc going on. I can't comment on Leicester or Birmingham.

There are a lot of nutters out there ...

I would like to think that my work is not too detached from reality! It's important to be aware of this though - and being open-minded and non-judgemental are essential prerequisites in my opinion.

I have a great office at the university, quite small but only two desks, access to photocopier/printer, kitchen etc. I am sort of hotdesking with three other PhD students, but they are rarely in so I am usually on my own. Having said that, I normally go in only once a week and work from home the rest of the time. I would love to go in more often, but the uni is a fair distance from home and I have to be there to drop off / pick up the kids from school. My husband works from home one day a week, so I go to uni that day.
