want to do a phd but lost
M

Hi Toasty, I have to admit I don't know about scholarships from funding bodies etc, but not all scholarships have deadlines for application by January. Mine is a university scholarship which I applied for in June (I think?). It's worth having a look around what is available.

Good luck!

40 is an excellent age to start a PhD, btw. ;-)

Telling tutor about personal problems affecting my studies - advice please
M

Quote From Natassia:

I think I will tell my main tutor, in the New Year though of course. I'm sure he'll be supportive, but as you said KB I don't like to use things like mitigating circumstances - in my UG class a lot of students made them up to get extensions etc when really they were being lazy - I know I'm not like that but using them would make me feel like I was abusing the system, its like they come with their own stigma attached.

You've already had good advice from the others, I just wanted to comment on this. I'm pretty sure they would know that you have genuine mitigating circumstances - they know you are a good, conscientious student and probably think very highly of you. They are probably also quite good at telling the difference between somebody making up excuses and somebody who is having real problems anyway! So please don't let this put you off talking to your tutor.

Good luck with it all and I hope you are able to relax a bit over the Christmas break! :-)

Role of Job experience in Scol
M

Hi, I think it's impossible for us to say whether you've got a chance of securing a scholarship or not because it varies widely between disciplines and universities. Maybe just apply for a few things? Otherwise, I think I would go either for a masters (MA, MSc) or try and get more relevant work experience. Good luck. :-)

Hi Jasim and welcome. :-) This forum is a mine of useful information and support (not to mention opportunity for procrastination), I'm sure you'll find it useful. Good luck with your MA. (up)

An MRes or nothing! What do you think of this?
M

I totally understand that feeling of just wanting to leave it all behind. Maybe what it comes down to is whether you think you can complete at your current university - if you do, go and fight for it. Also depends on whether it would be possible to move elsewhere. I really don't know the answer to that. Might depend on your funding though? Could you start again at a different university? If you decided to go for the MRes, do you think you realistically could work with your current supervisors? Assuming there is no chance of changing supervisors, of course.

An MRes or nothing! What do you think of this?
M

I guess you haven't had any replies yet because we don't know the situation as well as you do - I certainly am not sure what to suggest! Is there maybe somebody in the university who is unconnected to your department but can give you advice? It sounds like quite a mess and a difficult situation to be in. I'm not sure what to suggest re. MRes or MSc - what is your gut feeling? Good luck with whatever you decide. :-) And don't let it spoil your Christmas! (tree)

I'm planning to use mixed methods too - those link look interesting, thanks! :-)

Bereavment - dont know if I can cope with viva
M

Hi Sk100, I'm so sorry for your loss. It must be very hard. As the others have said, under the circumstances it should be possible to postpone the viva. On the other hand, you might find it helpful to just get it done and get it out of the way. If you do, they should take what happened into account, in my opinion.

Above all, take care of yourself.

Moonblue, drink hot choco, then get in bed early tonight, with a book and a hot water bottle under the covers near your feet, and turn on the heating.

My routine every night, plus drops of lav oil on pillow!!:p

Hot chocolate sounds like a good idea. I'm actually just about to go to bed, with a book (on writing a literature review :/ ) and a hot water bottle (plus a cat or two, one or two children, and a husband). Turning the heating up involves lugging in more firewood (or using tomorrow's firewood now and bringing in more tomorrow morning in the snow). Hot water bottle will have to do. :-)

Good night everybody. :-) (snowman)(tree)

Pah, no need to rub it in about being the warmest, Sue2604. My feet are frozen. Almost.

The Smiths? We might well be a similar age then. :-)

:-)

MB, I'd rather have some cold weather, especially if you guys are getting snow! Saw it on the news last nite, and looked lovely. Trying to get around in 40 degree heat, and study in a house with no aircon isn't fun.

OK, I'll send you a bit of our cold, maybe even some snow. We've got heavy snow forcast for the night and tomorrow morning.
(snowman) (snowman) (snowman) I do like snow. I just wish my feet were warmer!

You probably won't need to read it that intensively again, as you have already read (and understood) it all before. It might just come back to you if you have good look through it again?

I hope you have a better day tomorrow! :-)

I think I've got it. :-) How about a C?

Now, let me see about the underlying epistemological and ontological (aargh!) positions ... knowledge is generated randomly and by coincidence, reality is what students underline in library books.

Bloody hell Moonblue, you've just described the basis of my PhD!

Ah, excellent. Does that mean it makes sense after all?

I have done it! I have just submitted it electronically - it's such an awful essay, I'm surprised I didn't get an electronic error message when I submitted it... Now I just have to print it out.

I am so tired, I want to go to bed ... still got to let the dog out and make a hot waterbottle. I'd better be careful not to throw the hot waterbottle into the garden and fill the dog with hot water. :$ (Not that I throw the dog into the garden, I hasten to add...)

Good night, all you nocturnal workers. Have fun on the Midnight Express (I hope it has sleeping compartments?).
