Since you're Indian... I think you can apply for the Commonwealth Scholarschip and Fellowship Programme. My school has both a MSc student and a PhD student who are on this programme. See link : http://www.csfp-online.org/about.html

I don;t see why you can't keep looking for other places that possibly do offer funding. However, asking a potential supervisor for a recommendation for other PhD positions might nog be the best plan, since you might end up under his supervision...

Yes it was rather lonely. Apart from doing my PhD, I also work for the College as a college warden. I was on duty today, so couldn't get off campus... I had a nice lunch with some international students though :)

Even though it might seem like a very complicated situation, it isn't so really: basically you have to make a choice between a guaranteed PhD position or a year's work with a non-guaranteed PhD position. You shouldn't rely on "hopefully I get admitted", especially not in the current economic and education climate. If I were in your position I'd take the guaranteed one in Denmark and move on from there. You will have a PhD after 3-4 years and can still move to Australia afterwards...

Try the student unions, they might be able to help... and your own student union.

www.academictransfer.com is a Dutch website on which the dutch universities advertise their academic vacancies. Not only PhDs, but also postdocs and technician/management jobs. The info is presented in both Dutch and English. If your area of interest is cancer studies, then you might be interested in looking at the "University Medical Centres" section under the "Employers". The Medical Centres in the Netehrlands do a lot of cancer research. The two Amsterdam Centers (AMC and VUmc) are connected to the NKI, which is the Dutch Cancer Institute, which has a specialised cancer hospital.

don't actually know what the best way would be... authors might be reluctant to give you raw data, since pharmaco-therapeutic research is usually classified because of patents and industry money... perhaps try with researchers from your own institution first?
