I'd like something that might suggest PhD without being, er, "PhD" ;) LOL!

Quote From SimonG:
Sometimes, I actually wonder why I post in this forum. I think there's an element of having been through the process of doing a PhD, knowing how hard it is and feeling somehow obligated to share my experiences with people going through it... from trying to pick a project through to the viva and corrections. And encourage where necessary.

Mackem_Beefy:-
1. I added the proviso "Errrrr..." in my previous response as I am well aware that there is a vagueness regarding the nature of justapostgrad's corrections.
2. I am also well aware that institutions differ in time scales. That's why I said "normally". The norm seems to be three months for minor corrections. Curiously, mine sometimes offers eight weeks as opposed to twelve. Nobody seems to understand the differential. It's probably dependent on which way out the examiners are on the day.
3. Well of course, with post-viva corrections you're not over the line until you've done them and the examiner(s) approve(s) them. However, with achievable corrections - and justapostgrad SHOULD have a clear idea of the requirements after the viva - and no requirement for a re-examination (?), it's an "all but....".

Even minor corrections are not necessarily the breeze that some might have you believe. But with minor corrections, you've essentially achieved the standard,j-a-p, and nobody should take that away from you. Unless you're mad enough to do another PhD, you'll only have one "viva-pass day" in your life (and a Friday to boot :) - mine was on a Monday :-E ). So let everyone buy you a drink.

Simon... to be fair I don't think Mackem_Beefy was trying to insult you (you come across a bit defensive, although I may have misread that?)

Can anyone download this one? Last one, got the two above now. This is Science Direct so should be straightforward.

I think I can scrounge another paper out of my old PhD data, hence the requests.

I can access it, pm me :-)

Job/PhD Application: Bad A Levels/Good Degree
Avatar for Noctu

Hi,
This is slightly spooky as I was also in a serious RTA and as a result didn't do too well on my GCSEs, took a year out, then only got CDD for my A-Levels. (I still have back problems to this day unfortunately - we were T-boned by a car, the driver completely failed to give way at a junction!)

I went on to get a 2:1 from a poly, an MSc from another poly, and now finishing a fully funded PhD at a top 5 University...

So it IS possible! It might be beneficial for you to do an MSc though, I know my Uni probably wouldn't have accepted me without that.

Statistics help - very desperate! :'-( please help me!!
Avatar for Noctu

Hi Smiler,
Deep breath! I would really recommend that you sign up to the PSYCH-POSTGRADS list on JISCmail (Google it) and post your question there. There are many contributors there who have extensive knowledge of stats, particularly Jeremy Miles who has written quite a few stats books. They're usually really helpful.

Good luck!

PhD students (esp. Psychology) - What is your experience of research/academia so far?
Avatar for Noctu

Hello! :) I'm doing a PhD in a health psychology related subject. I'll put my responses below...

Quote From Rookie37:
Hi!

Firstly, apologies if my title question seems a bit weird/vague. What I really mean is a couple of questions, I suppose:

-What's your PhD topic? (just for interest) - Experiences of prognostication and the transition point from active to palliative care in heart failure
-Where/when did you get the inspiration to "go for it" in terms of research/doing a PhD - Seeing friends doing a PhD, enjoying my own research, getting a good mark in my dissertation for both BSc & MSc which made me realise I can 'do' research...! Plus doing a couple of fairly menial jobs to make some money during my studies (shop work and v low level admin) which I hated...
-What did you do before starting your PhD (i.e. degrees/masters/research assistanting) and was it helpful/worth it? Additionally, anything you wish you had done, in hindsight? - BSc Psychology w/ Criminology (BPS accredited), MSc Health Psychology, honorary Assistant Psychologist in secondary care adult mental health, honorary RA in a pain clinic. Assistant post very helpful, I was there for a year and it made me realise how I don't actually want to become a clinical psychologist as the entry requirements were so utterly ridiculous and the clin psychs I saw were all stressed, had to deal with difficult people the vast majority of the time (kinda obvious I know but it's very draining!) and work within very harsh constraints & red tape of the NHS.
-How has your Phd lived up to (or not) your dreams? - I love it, it's a lot of work but it's been a great challenge, I'm lucky to have great supervisors and enjoy the topic.

I'm just trying to gain a sort of general idea of what people feel has prepared them effectively for their own research in psychology.

Thanks :)

Rookie

Hope that helps!!
Rachel

Do conferences give notification of rejection?
Avatar for Noctu

Conference organisers are often a bit lax with this. I wouldn't assume either way. It might be worth dropping them an email to ask either way - or in the cases of large conferences, a phone call to the admin staff works well too (and you get an answer straight away!)

Address superivsor by first name basis
Avatar for Noctu

I address everyone in my department, including both my supervisors (one of whom being a Prof and Dean of the school!) by their first name, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Whilst they have (much) more experience in the field we treat each other as intellectual equals... I learn from them and, occasionally... they learn from me! lol :)
