O

http://www.blogthings.com/whatshouldyoubewhenyougrowupquiz/

You Should Be a Teacher
You are patient, optimistic, and good at explaining things.
You work well with all types of people, and you are a good role model.
Success and positive outcomes are extremely important to you.
You are both a good leader and instructor. People look up to and depend on you.

You do best when you:

- Can see the results of your work
- Are able to teach someone a new skill

You would also be a good nurse or non fiction writer.

10,000 hours to success?
O

What? The Daily Mail is not a reliable news source?!!!!!!!!!!!! Say it isn't so...........why, its where I keep up with all the latest, Madonna's divorce, the new fade for 8" heels ( are people crazeeeeeyyyyyyy???????), etc.....

I wasn't thinking that 10,000 hours had to be done in a single year, I was just trying to see how many years it would take to do 10,000 hours if you worked 8 hours a day....3.42 years--which is probably something like the average time to complete a PhD! Coincidence??!!! Hmmm....

But then there is that depressing article that says if you drink a lot of beer and work in science you are less likely to get published.....but wait, thats only for science.......checking my topic......whew.......it won't apply to me. Time to exit to the pub!

Four letter word--change a letter

Brief "rules of the road"--the idea is to change one letter to make a new word. The letters do not change position, the new letter must be in the same position in the word as the letter it replaces. For example, TREE to FREE is fine, but TREE to FRET is not.

Olivia is wishing it would quit raining so she could walk to Bleak Towers and not get soaked....and thinking that she should have learned by now to have a waterproof jacket or an umbrella at the ready at any time! :$

Negative Correlation Between Beer Consumption and Science Publication

A report that says ( but only for people who do science!) that the more beer you drink the less likely you are to get published!

'The Zone' and how to get into it...
O

I try to make a task list for each day--and I try to make it at the end of the day prior so I have something to focus on straight away when I come in and get down to work. The first part of each day I seem to spend on what I call "administrative work"--answering or sending emails, checking this forum! etc, things that need to get done but are not research per se. This sort of eases me into working mode, and then within say 30-45 minutes I can switch over to the research work I have planned for the day. I try to check emails first thing and last thing during the day, and not constantly throughout the day, unless I am expecting something of great interest or importance ( or am just having a really off day!).

I like to ease into the day--often with a cup of coffee extra at my desk, to get going in the morning. The other thing I try to remember to do is take breaks throughout the day, not just say for lunch, but every 45-90 minutes, switch "off" from whatever I am doing, take a short walk down the hall, stretch, stare out the window, or stare into space.

Wondering what this means in terms of a PhD--lets see, depressingly, 365 days x 8 hours is a mere 2920 hours......

Saturday seems to be the option that works the best for everyone!

I am not voting because either day would work for me!

sudden tiredness affecting progress
O

I hope that everyone who is feeling off gets sorted and feels better! In my own case, I am tired because of stress and not sleeping as well as I might ( which MIGHT have something to do with ingesting massive caffeine amounts during the day because I am tired.........hmm!) the past few nights--but I think the not sleeping well is due to stress as well. There is an ever present under current of stress, that is just there and does not go away.

I think it helps to know your own stress patterns...I realise what is going on with me, and its not a big deal, I am sure that tonight I will sleep some massive amount and be back to normal Friday--just in time for the weekend! I need to make sure to get more fresh air and relaxing exercise, and some fresh fruit and veggies, which means making time to get to the shops! ( ships I typed first....Freudian slip? where do I want to go??! ) I keep having really weird vivid dreams, when normally I do not remember my dreams, and again, I think its just stress, my brain never seems to turn off processing all of this PhD stuff, even while I sleep!

Quiz--How British Are You?
O

Quote From olivia:

So, as a substitute for 24 hours in a pub........I took a quiz to see how British I was. Not surprisingly, I am not. Not even Canadian! You Are 20% British Listen mate - you're definitely not British. .
There's not really anything British about you. Do you even like football matches or beer?

Hmmm.....seeing as I took this quiz as a substitute for 24 hours in a pub, I wonder about this last comment about liking beer....:p:p Perhaps I should just nip off to the pub that is beckoning down the street and forget about quizzes.

British culture is simply not your cup of tea. And you're obviously off your trolley!

If it just so happens that you live or come from Great Britain, you're still not British.

Another one bites the dust!
O

Well not in a negative sense--another draft chapter sent away for comment! Hooray! Nothing like that feeling of relief as my finger descends towards the send button on my email! I always feel like I want to go into a dark and shadowy pub and drink myself insensible for about 24 hours after I finish sending a chapter......but its an urge I have not succombed to (yet). But I do see a likely pub just down the road......
