Well, it seems like it would be difficult to move away. My original suggestion was to try and apply to management consultancies, they often offer sabbaticals for PhD after one or two years. However, in your case, that's probably not what you want to do. Therefore I would suggest that you either push those people in your department a little bit for funding or a clear statement or try to fund yourself somehow (at least for the first 12 months). Yes, take your MBA and run as far away from this university as you can. If they are so unreliable BEFORE you've even started, do you really want to work with them for three years or more?

What is it that leads people to ask always the same funding questions in this forum? Do you really believe we (mostly PhD or Postgraduate Students) can help you with this enquiry? Yes, maybe it's better to end this thread. It's bitchy and useless. It might still be good advice to tell the guy at Lancaster what you think about him - in his face. He won't expect it and it might even gain you some respect (from other's, not from him - although he might also be impressed retrospectively). People are always afraid of speaking out things, but from my observations, it's not always harmful to your career to demonstrate a certain degree of independent thinking. There are more than one good law universities in the UK. It might also depend on your grades. What class did you achieve for your BA (Hons)? If not so good, you may consider another master to improve your skills.

It sounds like you're well qualified. However, in the UK a PhD takes a long time, there are usually no credits (unless you're doing a Professional Doctorate like a DBA or similar). you will have to produce a dissertation, between 80-100,000 words in social sciences, in sciences usually 40,000 words.

Full-time: minimum duration three years

Part-time: minimum duration 4/5 years, maximum 60 years
