I would also have some reservations. Please search for the previous post about 'facebook'.

If you really have to do it, keep it very short and simple, i.e. just state in one sentence what your research is about, but don't provide a photograph (just say you don't have one). Always remember that every bit of information you provide is google-able (and downloadable); in other words, you should think carefully what information you want to provide for the world, old school friends, future employers etc.

It's nothing to be too relaxed about and the implications are far-reaching.

P.S.: I know it's a good thing for networking and all that, but IMO the negative factors are clearly carrying more weight. On the other hand, it's a personal decision but be aware that you don't have to provide this information. It's the last human freedom to decide freely about personal data.

Phd at open uni

possibly. But it's dull everywhere else as well. That's the nature of doctoral research. Hate it or love it.

Admission please help!

this cannot be generalised. Work hard, gain a first and then apply. If they think you are suitable, then you'll stand a chance. But this is case-specific and depends on your academic merits, in some cases GMAT test results and personality. At the moment, it might be best to get a first class degree as this will facilitate any future applications. Good luck.

Ageism and applying for academic positions
O

P.S.: Luckily, I don't work in such an institution but I know from my own experiences as a student that they do exist. Just have a look at staff profiles of so-called 'new' universities and you know what I'm talking about.

P.P.S.: Some new universities are very research active so I don't want to generalise but the black sheeps are out there and therefore I conclude that it's not that difficult to gain a lecturer post in certain institutions.

Ageism and applying for academic positions

I completely agree with you Ann. However, I know that in many teaching universities you can even find staff without PhDs. So if you have a PhD and maybe some publications in the pipeline or submitted, it is not that unrealistic to apply for lecturer posts without post doc experience. You just have to sell yourself well.

Unfortunately, in this country you will find a substantial number of new universities which don't care much about research or the RAE and more about making money from tuition fees etc. Of course, these institutions lack reputation and cannot attract good researchers. Nevertheless they require some teaching donkeys in order to keep the business running and therefore are quite happy to employ lecturers with no teaching experience, with no publicatin record but with a PhD.

Global Competition Review - my uni does not subscribe to this journal - help
O

That's not an academic journal, it's more or less a newspaper.

Check the link and then pay online to access articles:

Ageism and applying for academic positions
O

why don't you apply for a senior lecturer job in a teaching university (B-League if you want). The salary is the same and competititon for positions is not as intense as in Durham/Cambridge etal.

Can/Should non-PhD students give PhD students advice???
O

Yes, if they successfully completed a PhD.

BUT Should PhD students give PhD students advice: No!

Result: on this forum I would only take advice from Ann, DJW, Fluffymonster et al.

Friday Night - The whole world is enjoying life and/or clubbing..

Just had 2 cups of very strong coffee. That was a mistake as I won't be able to sleep till 10am, completely hyperactive (and tomorrow sleeping all day)

Good luck with your literature chapter. I'm off for a walk outside to clear my head.

If your supervisor knew, he would probably be thinking: "that's the perfect PhD student. Midnight, reading the references I suggested today".

Nobody else out there? Just Chris and Otto??

Friday Night - The whole world is enjoying life and/or clubbing..
O

..the whole world? No, a couple of PhD students are sitting in their studies, working through the night as they have an important mission to complete. Time and space become irrelevant as they only one thought goes through their head: "I have to stay awake and complete the dissertation..."

Anybody else working tonight?
