Setting up multiple accounts and asking identical, unhelpfully phrased, questions is not likely to win you any friends here.
You don't mention your subject, University, whether or not you're applying for funding or any other questions that would enable people to helpfully respond.
From the (very small) part of your posting that I can understand, it sounds like you're interested in knowing whether you should already be able to use techniques that your research depends upon? What techniques are they? My response is likely to be ENTIRELY different depending on whether these are fundamental to your project, whether pre-PhD students are generally allowed to develop these techniques (which depends upon a wide range of implications -- financial/ risk assessment/ etc...).

SO I wondered how you guys managed these.
Not managed in the sense of making time to have them, but stopping yourself from doing work when you should be having them. I'm basically finding the only way is to be physically away from internet access/ computer/ library (which I'm clearly not now).
Right now my husband is playing golf with a friend and I'm going to meet them in a few hours, but I'm mulling over a covert 'mission' to the British Library!!!!

It's very difficult to avoid sarcastic responses when the (very helpful!) people on here see messages like yours day-after-day.....
As has already been suggested, you need to have some grasp of the 'data set' -- e.g. 'schools' -- that you're dealing with before asking for help. I could write several thousand responses to this, none of which would be helpful to you because they wouldn't gel with what you wanted.

I'm not sure this applies for the AHRC.
Anything under four years is classed as being 'on time'!

OK I suppose I meant in terms of expecting it to be dropped on your lap without pay-off. I think everyone should be ENTITLED to education in very broad terms, but that they should expect the benefits that they get from said education to come at some kind of cost.

Oh this is all very silly.
It looks awfully like he was lying to me telling me he wasn't in Thursday and Friday so needed it by Wednesday to print it off. Uni have an electronic diary of when staff members are around, updated weekly to show movements on a daily basis. And you guessed it, he's down to be in today and tomorrow.
I'm not surprised he was so unreceptive when I suggested I give the administrator a copy on Friday to forward to his home address, he'd have been found out!

I think that the sense of entitlement many people have to education is fairly disturbing.

However, conversely, I think the loan-situation is going to be come more and more prevalent for Masters students (in particular) in the Arts and Humanities as an increased proportion of funding goes to Doctoral Students and it's assumed that they can get to this stage without assistance.

In the grand scheme of things 2k is not A LOT of debt. I think ending up in a situation where we're ashamed about debt again has the potential to be as shambolic as the pre-credit-crunch scenario. As such, I think for the vast majority of people WHERE A MASTERS IS A NECESSARY CAREER MOVE it makes perfect sense to take out a loan. Especially at the moment. The types of jobs on offer to many graduates at the moment are low paid and may well take a couple of years to save up for a Masters (and living in relative hardship at the time). Long-term, two years of pay when you're qualified is going to be worth a lot more than two years work trying to save up for a Masters..... even when you factor in interest payments....

Pamw's right, in the Arts we tend to have postdoc RA positions.
It's very difficult to evaluate, basically because none of use know how likely a Postdoc is to come up in a field relevant to you as well as you do! What's clear is if you take the RA position and carry on looking for a postdoc the damage to your career could be irreprable.

There seems to be a lot of confusion RE: quite what everyone means here and I think I'm going to be adding to it!

If so I'd be very careful, strictly speaking I think you're supposed to ask for permission to do so with the AHRC -- though I don't know how strict they are in enforcing this.....

Apparently he has no printer. Full stop. He just prints stuff off at Uni and takes it home..... Hmmmm

I had a meeting last week where I specifically said that I couldn't get a piece of work done for today. I basically relented after my sup. said he needed it by today if he was to mark it in time for the first week of term, because he hasn't a printer at home and so can't print it off to mark it (and this is the last day he's in).
Now I completely knew it was unrealistic. I emailed today to tell him that i'd been silly saying I could get it done today and offering to post him a hard copy. To which he responded that he wouldn't be able to mark it for weeks anyway because he's too busy.
This is all factual stuff but the tone made it clear that he wasn't impressed....
He already knows I have mental health issues that mean placing me under additional stress (i.e. by making deadlines too short) are likely to accentuate!
Argh! Just wanted to offload I guess as I'm a touch peeved.
