thanks guys.. for all the emphathy... it has been great to be a part of this forum... i understand all the things u tell me.. I know failures a part of life..but failing after so much effort and hardwork is not what is expected! ...

I guess it is all part of life.. I was reading this amazing book about Indian Mythology and thier ethics and values n stuff.. There it says.. "Those who dont have the teeth have the salted almonds and those who have the teeth dont have the salted almonds".. I know it sounds really bad in english (literal language conversion) but it sounds good in Indian (My frnd read it out to me)..

so i guess Phd is more like salted almonds!!

its surprising how peoople change.. The supervisor (ooops.. now the ex-potential supervisor) who I was in touch use to reply to my mails immediately and there were loads of exchange of e-mails. but surprisingly now.. hes not replied to my mail that I sent a week ago asking for comments on my interview n all.. life is not easy going.. it is not as it looks as well...

i wonder how many here on this forum has been successful this year. I know about slyvester... how about u golfpro?

go to u r lib..and look for the book "Grants Register"...u have loads of info in that.....i am sure u will find one or other foundation

how can this happen!?... how can this happen! to me... i feel devastated and gutted...um..i got to know the result of the telephonic interview which I had a couple of weeks back. Result nagative... i feel sad. I wonder, can this really happen, because I was in touch with my potential supervisor for than 8 months now. He said he is all okay with me and helped me with everything. My proposal, my interview and everything. I have read loads for this and I was the first one to apply this year. It was all fine and interview went on really well. I was all excitied and was ready to pack my bags and relocate.. but now..its a sad story... 8 months of hard work went in vain... its pain...:-(

I am gutted and get all wierd ideas, have completely lost my confidence. I have not many options now. I never felt so bad when I got rejections for other unis. This was my fav project.. and things were all fine.. but all of a sudden.... a blunder..

As I said, I had no intentions to mean any offense to anyone. I was reading (in fact re-reading)the book " How to make friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie and he says in that book . I was thinking, if we are queit how the hell will the other person know what you want to tell. I dint quite agree to his idea. So thought will ask the forum.

@ about2defend .. I honestly and completely appreciate what you are doing. It was just your name that caught my attention.

oops! the thread is meant to be a light hearted discussion and no offense meant to any person in any way. Was thinking of it when I was reading the messages on the thread "Most impressive answer".

Nothing in particular to about2defend. I did think that the name could mean he/she is ready to defend his/her thesis.

um....after reading the messages on this forum.. for sometime now.. a thought struck me. in fact a question that is unanswered and pretty much evident on this forum. well it could be good if u guys give u r opinions or thoughts. It is just the way how we think and we think differently. Why do we defend our stand, what would we get by make other person loose in the verbal war..particularly in a public forum like this...someone on this forum has the name 'about2defend'which is interesting... wise men once said..."the best way to win an argument is to be quiet!!".. what do wise now say?? :-)

that is the exact reason why i started this thread. I know most of them here are potential academics and sometime in future they would be interviewing candidates for PhD.. so its just visualising the Future Perfect (if i can say so? )

how long do u think the interview is going to last. I have attended telephonic interviews for jobs earlier and they would be for 1/2hr-45 mins... what do you guys reckon on this

what would be the most impressive answer you would expect for the question " Why do u want to do your PhD?" .... and what would you have answered!!..

I know it is entirely upto the individual;however there would be some general bits and pieces of advice for a newbie like me :-)

As the subject indicates.. i have an interview in next three days and surprisingly it is over the phone. I am a student living in the UK. I thght I would have face to face interview as it has many advantages. I have worked on my intonations all these days and try to get right tone at right time..I am bit worried because it is only words through phone that is going to decide my future. I am really keen on this project. I have read some of the topic, but there is loads more to read. I was expecting a face to face interview next month end, but they have stumped me!!Any suggestions!!? How many of you had telephone interview for your Phd (not studentships)!!??

oh! yes.. I did... he said.."i will be very happy to give u a reference". I also discussed my idea of reasearch and he gave his inputs as well...

Can I change my referees now? Do the unis give me another chance to submit a different refree.Even if they do, they would ask me how did I know what is on the reference letter. How imporatnt is the references for the decision of an PhD application. I am confused . Any suggestions .welcome!
