I think Catalinbond is hosting an all veggie dinner next, where we all might need to go naked...
Wally,... be careful else you might offend the naturalist society...I'd give you a link but regrettably vodfone content control prevents me from googling their images...
:-)

8. Present at France: paper to be written (argh)
9. Perhaps begin draft of paper being written with sup: hmmm...
10. Attend two network meetings of two European projects: sigh, yes to be done...
that's enough for a month, will be back sometme!!!
Hi all
been thinking on some style feedback from sup...
She says my writing has started giving agency to concepts (coming together, needing to be followed, needing to be rejected) while I am deleting the agency of thosse who do the intellectual tasks (of bringing these concepts together, revising and rejecting them) i.e. scholars, researchers including myself.
She says apparently I write very well but this is something which isnt quite right in my expression and it needs more voice from me to improve communicability. I do not merely think she is suggesting I use I and Me...
So I guess I have a sentence that goes "these thre concepts come together to produce a useful framework with which to...."
What would an alternative way be?
Any ideas?
Hello
Hmm. My answer will differ a bit..
I am a fulltime PhD student, absolutely on course to submit under 3 years. I work 3 days a week, of which 2 days are on pan-European and European multi-country research projects which have no specific time allottment. Plus I am very actively involved in speaking at conferences, writing papers, organising events/panels etc. Despite this, and depite my thesis-time being surprisingly 'bursty' although regular, things are on target. I have completed my fieldwork in the first term of my second year and have been writing and re-drafting throughout. I for one, have no idea on the number of hours I spend on thesis, for everything 'else' including the European projects feed into my PhD work.
I have a first draft due in September 2010 with an eye to submit around April 2010 to make the timing for a post-doctoral project that's under planning right now. I pay international fees (which I earn with my 3 days work every week and 4 days during vacations) and there is no feasible way for me to not complete within 3 yrs. It's going well and I think what you say above might be manageable depending on your working style.
I am a very bursty writer - i cannot spend days on end productively on just one thing I do bursts of writing here and there and things build up. For e.g. a conference paper of mine that just got accepted (this evening) at our field's biggest conference (also a version of Chapter x of my thesis) got drafted at a network meeting of one of the projects I work on, so technically it got drafted in 3 days when I was 'working' for money.
So, it's a question of style. I must mention, I am single, have no family to manage and can dedicate every day to my work and thesis. So that's another factor.
Congrats Algae queen!
Wally wally, the same happened to me just now!!! I got accepted to *the* biggest thing in our field!!! It's the annual gen conference of the biggest internatiooanl association in our discipline.
THe email goes -
Dear Phd Bug,
Congratulations! Your submission, "xyz," has been selected for the 2010 conference. This year we again had a record number of submissions, and we were able to accept approximately x% of them. Congratulations on your work being among them!
etc etc...
Gosh, my sup read the draft and made me re-write it so mnay times that I hated her for it, and now of course I love her for it!
:-)
Sneaks the naked man did wax but unfortunately didn't take a shower for days so, uhhm, sorry but I have to skip the canapes... and what's canapes without the alchohol? The punch looks weird because it looks a bit like potion..
The chicken is excellent and your house very cosy! I am giving you extra points for no veggies!
Burp. I'll go for seconds when Eska, Wally and the others are there... till then you're on course for a 10 on 10 unless something is discovered in the punch, the contents of which I am now going to investigate...

You guys are so sweet! :-) Wally, I loved your post, and Eska the rickshaw image made me laugh so much! Sneaks, did you get in the tub nude?
Thanks for the score and thanks cat and wal for the 80%... :-) so I get 5 from Eska, 8 each from Cat and Wall and 7 from sneaks which is 28!
Who next? Veggie feast from Cat? (if there's fruits an nuts and seeds and salad I shan't come!)

Edit: The menu is manageable Eska! (seriously, have done this in the past, minus the kulfis hmmm...) and I didnt mention servants did I? It's a bit of a tradition to help out at friends' bashes and steward for friends (not as servants) and I think I mentioned the friends bit but if outside help is a no, then of course bye to kind friends! :-)
