What is the ideal age to do a PhD?

:-) I do not think Jinkim or I were defending our youth. There's nothing to defend/attack here.

Perhaps if a young 'un had written something like 'I started my PhD at 21, and personally I dont think I'd have had the energy/spark (or any other word here) to go and do fieldwork in my 50s (but maybe that's just me), someone in their 50s might have wished to remind the young 'un that that's just their personal opinion, it's nothing to do with age.

Again, they might just have let the young 'un say this above and let them be as they'd expressed their own view of themselves.

Who knows? I responded the way I wished to, but that was not a defence of anything, I assure.

Quote From moussec:

For a start, I can't imagine I'd have had the maturity to interview people with any depth as a 20s graduate (but maybe that's just me)

Yeah, that's just your individual take, for excellent interviews are done by 20s grads. Has nothing to do with age.

Guys, bit of advice please :)

In a day's time, I will need to report from my ongoing fieldwork to a completely non academic audience. My work is at one level intensely intellectual, but on another framing has a policy relevant angle. However, this audience will be star academics (a few) and mostly media industry, policy, educators etc.

I am trying to (1) contextualise my stuff after a a star panel (2) scope my project in about 4 points (3) select 6 stories/quotes from the fieldwork to make 3 core points to drive home (4) conclude and open the floor to discussions.

Aiming for about 1000 words for 10 mins. Does the structure look Ok? any other tips?

PS: Yet again I find I am the only student speaker, so any advice much appreciated for am getting nerves at the thought of the audience, unlike all other audiences at the conferences I speak at.

Thanks guys!! :)

Alas Rubyw, you cannot, but I will! Sigh, cyber-archaeology is more out of user-control in the era of interactive media, than ever before...

Why does this bother me? dunno. PGF is as open like the student union cafeteria so ideally anything goes. I know. But still...

Continuing to study properly when personal life becomes stressful - advice please
P

Natassia, I am going to say this bluntly, for that will shake you by the shoulders a bit. Ok? :-)

Stop obsessing with studies. What's going to happen if you don't study for a fortnight? What's going to happen if you miss 14 days of classes and then take two weekends to make up?

Who cares? You. If you get a perspective and try to realise that the ultimate goal is to be a scholar/researcher of some standing, then two weeks of MSc seminars and lectures do not honestly matter.

For a person as committed as you are, and as intelligent, I am hoping much of this above is evident to you as well.

I dont know if you read Harry Potter, but if you do, do note that there is a reason why Harry is the central character and not Hermione. If you havent read it read up the character sketches on Wiki. I spent my entire school colege and uni life being a Hermione. ANd it is only now that I have realised that grades, obsessijng with a couple of wasted days/weeks or fortnights mean *zilch*.

Good wishes for your relative, be by him and above all, get the perspective that a future scholar must develop ASAP.

I think I am convinced by now that FB ads are specifically 'suited' for the contents on the person's profile space. They match ads with content on your profile and/or applications and/or exchanges with others.

I have, in the course of interviewing 60 children in 7 London schools for my fieldwork being coming across too many similarities between person's FB content and the ads they see.

Some are random, many are not.

Creepy and weird, I think.

As for postgradforum, I have a netbook and am finding the new geography impossible to tackle. If the advertisers think this will 'aid' their cause in any way, it's wrong. For much of my irritation is spilling over to the content of the ad itself now.

Hi there, I am 24, and in my 2nd yr. My sup is a little more than double my age (!) and she and I will be a half century and a quarter century, respectivley over 2010

There are no power differentials for age. Sometimes I guess she gets to boss me but that's when I really need it because I am doing things worng, and that's good that she can.

I have a few mature colleagues in my dept and they seem to find it fine, althouh I dont quite know how it feels to have the sup very near to your age... I guess I am still in school-college mode.

But it can be very positive too, I have heard, and facilitates a collegial rapport.

Hi mods

Unless my browser is palying tricks, I see that the right side of the forum pages have been occupied by adverts. This has reduced the width of the threads making reading a little problematic. I daresay, it's merely a question of time before we get used to this. Any chances of changing it the right side though? like placing it elsewhere?

I spent the autumn talking to teens using Facebook and al of them siad they dont even look at the adverts bar on FB for they 'know' that has the ads :-) while that will happen with us too, right now it hits the eye while reading...
