Oh eska I love you :-)

Just out of a meeting on the pan European project thing I work on. And I heard this sentence, as people sat and brainstormed the nth version of a uqestionnaire and made an *immediate* note to come and share with you guys...

"Remember, when you are chiseling a draft for the 7th and 8th time, implementing all your desired revisions, sometimes you are so focused by then on whats ON the page that you have lost sight of what's never been on the page... '

i.e. that's the time to take a break, send it to someone else, go off and do something different and come back to see 3 things you never thought you wanted but which makes it all look so much better...i.e. when you are too used to it, dont submit it...take a break from it so that it gives you fresh perspectives (or not)..

an interesting thing I thought for we have all been writing linear stories of how we get about doing this...similar stuff from us all, and this bit in between is a nice break!

Hmm, so far, generally we all seem to have three main phases: first: idea, gathering stuff, writing some draft, second: post review massive reaarangement and revisions, and third: chiseling, fine tuning, fiddling around and submission....

Hi folks,

want to start a (potentially) helpful game?

Let's note down the steps that happen for us, as we move from point A (an idea) to point B (a finished draft, revised and ready for submission).

The idea is, we all post our writing paths, and make notes from others, as appropriate and get to share what works for us (or not).

I'll start off with my 10 steps: (written keeping in mind something like an essay/article)

1. The idea, some thinking
2. A search through key things in relevant literature, prints and PDFs in a folder
3. A day or two to read/skim through, plus brush through 'core' readings
4. Return to idea: prepare a sketch on paper/pen of the flow/narrative
5. Rough draft (this happens v v fast for me, and then I slowwww down)
6. Chisel, move around
7. check for 5 to 7 key steps in the argument. match intro and conclusion.
8. show someone/s trustworthy
9. revise/rechisel as appropriate
10. Submit

Hello

I dont think you need to narrow anything down. Check out the website, if it's solely intellectual stimulation you seek, look around the courses on offer, look at the course content of the modules, the research interests of the prof teaching the course and see what your funding situation is.

The graduate open evening happens sometime in October I think, or November, whatever it is, check out their website. That will give you a rushed opportunity to meet some faculty and students and get any queries clarified.

Quote From sneaks:

yeah - but I have just written my lit review and I am starting my 3rd year - so I am sure she will just say I need to stop writing rubbish and get on with it lol. Oh well - I only get about 2 sup meetings a year so after that I can hide again until after xmas.

sneaks, are u full time? or even if part time how are u managing with just 2 meetings a year? Isnt it too little?

Word 2007 - Header Help!

apparently you need to put a section break after each section with one header so that the next header applies to the next section.

i have tried and failed athough that seems to be the correct route

COMPUTERS!!! GRRR

oh thats a different system then! for our drives are accesible from anywhere in the world, on remote desktop or VPN and the uni absolutely recommends it as not only a safe space but the safest space. Staff research, including huge grants and funded prpjects and personal research is all on there. Our webpages are hosted by these spaces and our emails as well. Also departmental stuff, the uni;s own stuff, everything actually lol!

Flipside: 3 days server maintenance evry other year when everything is off for 3 days. But it's worth it.

no help to you for just making a joke, and you guys wil have heard of this one for ages, but I once read a book where the author thanked this way....

"and finally, I would like to thank my wife for staying up with me as I revised drafts upon drafts, but most, I'd like to thank my two lovely chidren X and Y, but for whose help this book would have been finished at least two years ago.

To them, with love, I dedicate this book"

Oh and a PS: Joyce is absolutely right in what she says. My sup i see frantically backs up on pen drives, laptops etc all the time..

a lecturer in our dept lost half his life last summer for his data crashed (and he is involved in so many things) and then he didnt have the back up or the back up was outdated as he was busy lately... or even that crahsed...

was a lesson for the entire dpeartment, we hear the story still....

sneaks, sorry havent read the whole thread, so this may have come up, but havent you got those uni H or Z or U spaces?

My uni announced an increase in storage for PhD students on request. I immeditaely took it upm for I am working on two multi country EU projects, plus my pHD, plus teaching, hence it;s unmanageable. The one is a 21 country thing, another that I just started is a 9 country thing and hnestly i am more scared about data from these going missing rathr than my stuff, which is at least in drafts, in my head in my email etc!

Uni drives are backed up at our uni every night and they can provide deleted copies for up to 3 months. Have done that loads of times....

Otherwise, google is good but I hear it has a limit now....
