I am moving to a new country in Europe (I dont speak the language at all) with a post-doc job in a few weeks, and my insides are knotting up!

I totally get you DanB and I wish I had some tips to offer,but am feeling (a) scared (b) guilty for feeling scared for I got a job after all,and have no business complainin...

Have not been logging on - as (a) got a job so have been interviewing and (b) submitting in 4 weeks so stretched thin :( Sooooooo happy and encouraged to hear your news. Am off to a European country with a post-doc soon after submission, so will miss everything here.

I wonder what the pre-viva moments must feel like. Even thinking about it knots up my insides.

I did, central London mainly :-) Was fun.

Others? Where did you go? Did you have stuff with you to hold up, chants to chants?

My PhD room is sooo good with such great people but sometimes construction work outside gets unbearable (central London location worsens things), so I have resorted to silicone earplugs which have worked wonders!

Warfare: From animals to aliens

OPENING PARA

In this thesis, I ask, in what ways our knowledge about the battle of mammals, emergent from many decades of empirical research with animal warfare, is useful in understanding warfare amongst aliens. Throughout this thesis I use warfare as the sum total of active, engaged, involved, sometimes critical and resistant tasks performed in fighting with the opposition, irrespective of the directionality of warfare (i.e. one way, interactive etc.) I use warfare to indicate a set of tasks enmeshed within social histories and practices of animals and aliens and shaped to a considerable extent by the provisions of the battlefield itself. Throughout this thesis, I use the word warfare to connect animals and aliens and extend animal warfare theory into the age of aliens, without positioning a gulf between animals and aliens. What is of interest to me is how far the conceptual framework accumulated around the notion of uni-directional animal war activity is instructive and constructive in the context of multi-directional, alien-generated, interactive warfare. I carry these concepts into a project with aliens from Venus but the subjects of interrogation are the concepts themselves. "

Am in the social sciences, and I absolutely, completely, use I. It's compelling, persuasive and offers a narrative that's personal to the reader, when it's needed.

Thanks Pink, and as we know it's not a race... I have the added pressure of hving to find a job (any country, pref in the West) within 3 months of my viva (I am international),...can u imagine the uncertainty and stress? :-( I want to scream at times!!

I submitted my first full draft at 2 years 2 months, my second (final one my sup sees) draft at 2 yrs 5 months and am submitting at 2 years and 8 months. And no - absolutely no objection from anyone :)
